Wok Buffet Shanghai

February 2nd, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

This is one of two Wok Buffet restaurants in Almerimar, the beach side of darsena one. I had heard mixed reports about it, so when a group of girlfriends suggested a Chinese there I was definitely curious, and I have to say that I came away very pleasantly surprised.

It is incredibly good value, as an ‘all you can eat’ buffet at 8.95€, and the food overall was pretty good. In addition bottles of very drinkable house wine were 4.95€, coffee was only a euro and everything else was included.

We certainly didn’t take the view that this was an opportunity to have a complete pig-out, which one friend has told me was her experience of other diners there the night her and her husband tried it. We just ate a reasonable meal but enjoyed being able to have bits of a lot of different starters and side dishes, before selecting our meat and vegetables, and how we wanted them cooked for the main dish.

I always have a slight dilema when having a chinese meal with my husband as we tend to like different things but I like to share a number of dishes and usually too many! Chris likes rice AND noodles and spare ribs; I like crispy duck, salad and vegetables, and given the choice we would probably select different sauces; the Wok Buffet, if the food is as good as last night, solves all that.

We began with some mixed starters that our waiter brought to the table, including, salad, spring roles, prawns, some really good sesame toast and crackers. We then had crispy duck, again served, before checking out the buffet for some more starter nibbles, rice and noodles. Later our waiter even brought us some Sushi rolls.

The buffet had a good selection of meats, fish and vegetables, in relatively small dishes so things seemed fresh. Maybe there would be a problem with things running if the restaurant was very full, but we were one of only 3 tables last night. I chose some chicken, big prawns and a selection of vegetables and elected to have a picante sauce which was pleasant. I liked the inclusion of I guess less traditional vegetables, as broccoli, courgettes and carrots always get my vote for stir fries.

I then finished off with some Chinese berries, and overall had a very pleasant meal and evening, and didn’t have that feeling of having eaten too much salt that I often get with Chinese food!

Well worth a try!

See I could have waited to find out from the blog, rather than at 3am in the morning :-)

Is this the one closest to the tower or the one closer to Minimal as there are two next door to each other? We have used the one closest to the tower in the past and it has aways been OK for us.

Rather than bringing the starters to the table there is an area with pre-prepared starters similar to the ones you mention. They also offer you some peking duck cooked fresh if you want it. The rest of the prices and food available sound very similar so there is probably not much to choose between the two.

The one we go to has all the old staff from the Hong Kong restaurant on Darsena 3 that we used to use from time to time. However, we now use the buffet closest to the tower on Darsena 1 if we fancy a chinese.

It is the one nearest to the tower. I think we may have got some extra service, having some starters brought to the table. This may have been because the restaurant was quiet or who knows? maybe because we were a table of girls!!!

Although nothing at all to do with chinese food, I would like to ‘flag up’ the fact that Almería beat mighty Real Madrid 2 - 0 last night, which was a fantastic (and unexpected) result. Venga!

Incidently, We seem to favour the Wok Buffet furthest away from the tower, but have had good meals in both of them. Still like the ‘Hong Kong’ on darsena 2 best. The staff seem to always be friendly, and less strained.

    Hasta Luego.

I am with you on that one, is actually the only Chinese I have ever been to here!!!
