Wok Buffet Shanghai
February 2nd, 2008 - Sandra MarshallThis is one of two Wok Buffet restaurants in Almerimar, the beach side of darsena one. I had heard mixed reports about it, so when a group of girlfriends suggested a Chinese there I was definitely curious, and I have to say that I came away very pleasantly surprised.
It is incredibly good value, as an ‘all you can eat’ buffet at 8.95€, and the food overall was pretty good. In addition bottles of very drinkable house wine were 4.95€, coffee was only a euro and everything else was included.
We certainly didn’t take the view that this was an opportunity to have a complete pig-out, which one friend has told me was her experience of other diners there the night her and her husband tried it. We just ate a reasonable meal but enjoyed being able to have bits of a lot of different starters and side dishes, before selecting our meat and vegetables, and how we wanted them cooked for the main dish.
I always have a slight dilema when having a chinese meal with my husband as we tend to like different things but I like to share a number of dishes and usually too many! Chris likes rice AND noodles and spare ribs; I like crispy duck, salad and vegetables, and given the choice we would probably select different sauces; the Wok Buffet, if the food is as good as last night, solves all that.
We began with some mixed starters that our waiter brought to the table, including, salad, spring roles, prawns, some really good sesame toast and crackers. We then had crispy duck, again served, before checking out the buffet for some more starter nibbles, rice and noodles. Later our waiter even brought us some Sushi rolls.
The buffet had a good selection of meats, fish and vegetables, in relatively small dishes so things seemed fresh. Maybe there would be a problem with things running if the restaurant was very full, but we were one of only 3 tables last night. I chose some chicken, big prawns and a selection of vegetables and elected to have a picante sauce which was pleasant. I liked the inclusion of I guess less traditional vegetables, as broccoli, courgettes and carrots always get my vote for stir fries.
I then finished off with some Chinese berries, and overall had a very pleasant meal and evening, and didn’t have that feeling of having eaten too much salt that I often get with Chinese food!
Well worth a try!
