Why Rioja? Or Not?

Here’s one for the weekend … a post about wine! I read a fun article the other day about Rioja.

It takes the form of a few questions and answers about Rioja among others things. Apparently the reason most of us have heard of Rioja and may not drink other Spanish wine is down to the fact that the region invested early and heavily in marketing to raise their brand awareness. The writer of the article is discussing this with his wine expert friend, whose view is that, whilst Rioja do make some great wines, about 80% of it is ‘pure rubbish’. Rioja Wine - What’s all the fuss about?

Having said that now that I come to look in our little wine rack … we have no Rioja! Maybe that is the way to go. I can feel a little more wine research coming on! Anyway for anyone wanting to know more, there is a recommendation to stick to Crianzas, and some useful links to some websites for the start of future research!

I’m not sure that I would spend 10 euros on any bottle of wine!!
Mind you, I always have been a skinflint.

I am with you though. I wouldn’t ay 10€ for wine but only because there is no need as is plenty of good cheaper stuff around. If/when we do pay that much as no other choice I don’t regret it though as it is still very reasonably priced and is pretty much always really good.

As for wine in the house 6€ is at the top of our scale I think??

As we drink quite a lot of red wine we have found that the best value we can find for a good day to day glugging wine is to purchase a 15 litre wine box of Murcian wine from Benahadux.

The equivalent of 20 bottles of red wine for 17 euros a box. However, you have to add in the cost of petrol and time as it is around 1/2 hour trip each way. Mind you various people tend to do the trip and bring a number of boxes back that they sell at cost to friends.

It is not Rioja but it is a very pleasant tipple.

15 litres of “glugging wine” - that sure is a big glug!!!!

Must give it a try, although I reckon we are hard pushed to drink 20 bottles of wine a year in the apartment on a ‘day to day’ basis, so it would have to keep well
