Yep, the Apple site has a guide of 5 things to do with your iPod of it freezes - that is one of them. It then has a list of 3 advanced things you can do as well.

Have been through them all to no avail, the Nano is well and truly dead. What the girl did to your daughters was a soft reboot, so it didn't lose any data. It actually requires you to hold down the center button and the menu button at the same time. I can't even hard reboot i.e. start from scratch with Sands.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Don't know if this will help but my daughter had a similiar problem with her Apple Ipod when it was just a few months old. We were due to leave the next day for a few days holiday in Almerimar and she was distraught at the prospect of a couple of plane journeys without her beloved ipod. She took it back to Argos to see about having it replaced as it was still under guarantee but the girl behind the counter had it operational again in ten seconds! She held the central menu button in for ten seconds while the ipod rebooted and it worked perfectly afterwards and has continued to do so since. Apparently she does this regularly for ipod users who bring back their 'faulty' ipods to the shop and I find it unbelievable that this function is not mentioned on the user guide supplied with the ipod. This may not help you as Im sure the Apple Helpdesk would have suggested this simple solution but it may help someone else and, believe me, we were also very impressed with the quality of the customer service.
