Wedding Anniversary, Dinner and Stumble Inn

August 24th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

It is a friend’s wedding anniversary on Monday (one year), so last night we went out to help them celebrate along with his parents.

They came round to the apartment for a couple of drinks first and then we headed down to the marina to what is in fact becoming a favourite restaurant of ours ……. Café Noray.

Last night we had the Beans and Ham, which was excellent as ever, followed by the Suckling Pig which was tremendous. We hadn’t had it before there, but will order it again for sure. Maybe not next time as the Suckling Lamb mist be worth a try, and the Duck Thigh also received a lot of praise from those that ate it.

A celebration cake had been made and deposited in the restaurant so we didn’t order any postres, but at 20€ a head (including 3 bottles of wine and a few other drinks) it was really good value.

We then walked over to the Stumble Inn (old Kenny’s) in Dársena 1 to ‘celebrate’ the opening. There were a lot of people there, and not for the free drink as you had to buy your own (which I think makes sense as in the past bars offering free drink on the first night have always had a lot of people attend, but not return). Martin had put on a pretty good buffet from the looks of it but a) we were full and b) it was really hot and humid last night so most people were covered in a light sheen of perspiration ….. or in my case sweating like the pig I had just eaten.

I had a long chat with Phil and Russell who had renovated the bar. They had to strip everything out, and the biggest job was soundproofing the whole bar. They have done a really good job and the bar is totally different from when it was Kenny’s. It is very modern, spacious and minimalist with a huge mirror along the back wall and a very large window hatch at the front (or there will be when it finally arrives).

We seemed to know a lot of the people who were there last night so had a really good catch up. Kenny’s was the first English bar in the marina and at the time was brilliant as you just knew that if you popped along at any time you were bound to know someone. As the number of English bars increased (there are 9 now) everything sort of got dispersed, so in a way last night was part celebration of the opening of the Stumble Inn and part a Kenny’s Reunion for us ‘long time residents’ of Almerimar.

It was too busy last night to get any really good photographs, and to be honest I was having far too much fun and just fancied a night off from the camera and camcorder. I did arrange with Martin go down and take some photographs etc at some stage though.

Will we use the Stumble Inn in the future? That really depends on the clientele, which is the same for any bar of course. People make bars in my view. The Stumble Inn is very clean, very attractive and very pleasant. It isn’t really ‘to my style’, but I imagine a lot of people will like it. I prefer the more traditional, smaller Spanish style of bar, but that is me. The Stumble Inn plans to close at midnight so it wont be a late bar, but I could imagine using it as a pre dinner bar if we ever got dressed up for a night out (so on that basis we wont be using it!!!). I can’t see it becoming a local as it is too sterile in design in my view, but I am sure that it will attract a lot of tourists as it has a big terrace, a flat screen TV and an imposing frontage.

Consensus opinion was that the name was a good one!
