Voting From Abroad
January 2nd, 2008 - Sandra MarshallI read this interesting and quite thought provoking article today on the following subject: “Do expats really deserve a say on British politics?” The writer is based in France but it applies to all expats including those living here in Almerimar, Andalucia Spain.
Among the points it mentions an expat who is petitioning Downing Street to create MPs specifically elected by and representing the interests of British expats living in Europe, and arguing against expats losing their voting rights after 15 years abroad.
It also weighs up the pros and cons of voting in the UK if you are no longer resident there. The writer actually decides that despite arguments FOR concerning family ties, pensions etc. he found it hard to justify voting in a country that by choice he had decided to absent himself from, and came up with a to him more appealing alternative.
“Personally I would far rather see a different system: I would be much happier if EU citizens could simply be allowed to vote in the member state in which they were resident.”
An interesting thought and one which brought me back to a related thought that I keep having. Why is it that when I spend so much time in Spain I know SO little about the politics and generally what is going here? Maybe this is another New Year aim for 2008. To take more interest the country where I now chose to live.

About Almerimar
Almeriamar is located in the province of Andalucia, Spain. The nearest airport is 30km away in Almeria. Other airports that are within 3 hours include Malaga, Murcia, Granada, and Alicanti. Other holiday resorts in the region include Mojacar , Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar
Almerimar is a great place to live as an expat amongst the expats, or to work amongst the Spanish. There are all kinds of properties including villas, apartments and town houses for rent or sale. It is a very traditional part of Spain, with traditional Spanish foods so if you plan to travel to Spain either to look for jobs, for your company to trade with companies in Spain, or to learn Spanish and enjoy the Spanish weather then come and take a look.
Almerimar is one of the largest marinas in Spain with over 2,000 births and excellent boatyard facilities. If you are interested in buying or selling a boat please visit our advertisers Yes Yachting or the Boat Company
