Visits and Excursions
March 21st, 2007 - Chris MarshallThere are a number of interesting things to do in and around Almerimar.
The Castle of Guardias Viejas
Wars and pirates caused the construction of lookout posts to protect the coastal populations. Only 5 mins from Almerimar, the Castle of Guardias Viejas was built in 1769. Today it is restored and houses and interesting museum. Located a few kilometres further the Balerma Tower belongs to the same defence system.
The Daymum
Small temple to be found on a round-about north of El Ejido in the direction of Berja; it is a Roman mausoleum erected at the end of the 3rd century. The building is considered as further proof of the “City or Murgi” and sheltered sarcophagi, part of a Roman necropolis.
Cultural Centre of El Ejido
Situated in Calle Colombia, the centre displays a mosaic completed in the 3rd century A.D. This 17m² mosaic represents mythological figurines, animals and vegetation: believed to come from the floor of a lounge or a dining room of a house. These remains were found in Ciavieja, an archaeological park to be found in front of the crossing of Avenida del Oasis where many remains were discovered giving creedance to the origins of the Roman city or Murgi.
The Town Hall of El Ejido
Worth having a look as this building houses all the services of the municipality and has received awards for its design. Constructed in 1996 this functional building has a welcoming main Plaza.
Green Houses
Everyone should know what is going on under the ’sea of plastics’ - to know and understand. Everyone is welcome to visit and sample. For information Call Lola Gómez. Tel: 620 84 33 85.
Almeria Capital
The various cultures over time, the contrast between sea and the rocky mountain scenery, the light and the colours give Almeria a personality worth discovering all of its own.
A visit to the Alcazaba, the 10th century Moorish citidel, gives an idea of the splendour of that epoch. It’s the biggest that the Arabs built in Spain. Plazas with beautiful structures, the cathedrat, churches, public edifices such as the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) or the Deputation (la Diputación), interior patios, the large avenue (la Rambla) and small streets with facades with traditional doorways make Almeria a city with a lot of magic.
Cabo de Gata
One of the most breathtaking scenic areas of Southern Europe, tagged “Grand Reserve of the biosphere” these 38,000 hectares of land and 12,000 hectares of sea accommodate more than a thousand species of flora and fauna. Virgin coves, beaches, dunes, mountains and cliffs form the protected region.
Alpujarra
The enchantment of the mountains with the magic of the small villages. Don’t doubt taking a car to loose yourself in the Alpujarra region; replete with with white villages with a typical architectural style, full of orchards, fruit trees and almond trees, this region opens its arms and attracts many visitors. Eating well goes together with drinking well and each village produces its own wine to accompany sausages, ham, loin, fruits and vegetables produced by the region.
Play Cowboy and discover Europe’s only desert
Did you know that Tabernas desert (30 km from Almeria) was the site of many western movie scene? Tabernas was transformed into a filming plateaux beginning in the sixties; Sean Connery, Alain Delon, Clint Eastwood and Brigitte Bardot to quote a few, starred here. Some of the sets have been kept or renovated: it is possible to visit them and easily imagine you could be in Arizona or Texas deserts mixing with cowboys and Indians of that era.
