Vicar Market
March 5th, 2008 - Sandra MarshallVicar market is only about 20 mins from Almerimar and takes place on Sunday mornings (we think the first 3 Sundays of the month). It is one market that I haven’t got around to going to yet, so thank you to John for this insight:
To get to the market you join the motorway towards Almeria and turn off at Vicar (424 km). At the end of the slip road turn right and head towards the coast. The road winds round through greenhouses and you eventually reach Puebla de Vicar. When you reach a roundabout with statues on it the market is straight ahead of you. However, you have to turn left or right at the roundabout and go along the road until you find somewhere to park. After that you walk back to the market.
The layout of the market is in a big square around the outside of some industrial units. There are also some stalls in the side streets inside the square.
The majority of stalls are for clothes and shoes. However, there are a wide variety of other stalls as well, e.g. sweets, nuts, bedding, materials, pictures, ornaments, kitchen utensils, vegetables, costume jewelry, handbags, belts, plants etc.

There are also stalls selling roast chickens and others selling ‘churros’ (a bit like long strips of unsweetened doughnut that you dip in hot chocolate). My brother tried them without the chocolate and said it was a bit like eating a crispy yorkshire pudding.
We arrived around 11.00am and the market was going strong. We understand it starts earlier than this and winds down from around 12.30.
This does sounds very similar to the El Ejido market which is the first 3 Wednesdays of every month. I was however interested to see the photos of the craft stalls above, as I don’t think I’ve seen anything similar in El Ejido; they seemed more like some of the stalls at the Medieval Market in the summer.
