UK Pensioner Back In The Bullring
August 21st, 2008 - Chris MarshallWe have written about bullfighting before, and have come to the conclusion that isn’t something that we would want to support or indeed go to. I was however intrigued to read about the 66 year old UK Matador who has just made a return to the ring:
The Salford grandfather of four performed his comeback fight on the eve of his 66th birthday to stunned aficionados gathered at a bullring in Villanueva de la Concepcion, a pueblo perched on the Andalusian hillside above Malaga.
A crowd of several thousand welcomed the return of El Ingles - as he has become known- and to cheers of “Ole” he flourished his red cape and executed a series of elegant passes, the only torero in history to perform with a titanium knee.
After a tense 20 minutes the first ever Englishman to have earned the accolade of Matador de Toros dispatched the 350 kg bull with his sword.
As the bloodied beast fell to its knees, its tongue lolling, Mr Evans stepped forward, thrust his chest out and executed a long low bow.
His clean kill earned him the reward of both ears, which were cut from the bull, and paraded as he toured the ring in a lap of honour. [Telegraph ]
That said the description reinforces my opinion, and while it may have been a glamorous (and novel) activity in the 1960’s for someone from the UK, I think it is pretty sad really that he felt compelled to go back to the ring.
