UAE stops jailing expats for bounced cheques
January 20th, 2013 - Chris MarshallBack in July 2009 I posted about Ex-Pats Jailed In Dubai For Bouncing Cheques. The post has been one of the most commented on and would have received more comments if the blog hadn’t been banned in Dubai.
Yes, such was the authorities concern at the level of advice been given on the comments on this little old blog they blocked it. One of the highlights of my blogging attempts it has to be said.
Anyway I read earlier in the month that expatriates jailed for defaulting have been released from prison and federal courts no longer accept bounced cheques presented by lenders as evidence of a crime, which effectively decriminalises defaulting on a loan in the UAE.
Naturally I fully expect the ban on my blog to be lifted as well!
