Treasure Hunt – Saturday 29th March

February 25th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

As you know we are very much into supporting the Stray Cats & Dogs here in Almerimar, and to date have done a Sponsored Run to raise some funds, have adopted a couple of cats (Moreno & Saidi) ourselves, and help feeding some of the local cats.

Our hope is that we can continue to do this and stop the population increasing, and find homes for as many as possible.

This year we plan to do a lot more including:

  • Adding a specific Stray Animals page to the site so that you can submit and see pictures of cats and dogs needing homes
  • Adding the ability to donate to support the costs either online or in collecting boxes around the marina
  • More sponsored events – Chris is mulling over the idea of running a marathon!
  • A series of fun fund raising events.

More on those later. For now we want to tell you about the first event, a Treasure Hunt around Almerimar that we have teamed up with Almerimar24 and Alcor Properties on.

thposterp-2.jpg

Alcor Properties, almerimarlife.com and almerimar24.com have got together to arrange a Treasure Hunt around the port of Almerimar in support of work done here with the stray cats and dogs (getting them spayed/neutered to reduce the chance of more strays, arranging for homes for the strays etc.).

The event will take place on Saturday 29th March 2008 and will involve teams of 4-5 people (max. 5 per team), walking around the port looking for the answer to clues, calling in to 6 bars around the marina, having a drink and answering some quiz questions etc. We will only have space for 18 teams so if you are going to be around in Almerimar at this time and are interested in taking part them make a note in your diary.

Please feel free to email us or leave a comment below if you have a question, suggestion, or want to reserve your teams place.

About Almerimar

Almerimar is located in the region of Andalucia, Spain. The nearest airport is 30km away in Almeria. Other airports that are within 3 hours include Malaga, Murcia, Granada, and Alicanti. Other holiday resorts in the region include Mojacar , Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar

Almerimar is a great place to live as an expat amongst the expats, or to work amongst the Spanish. There are all kinds of properties including villas, apartments and town houses for rent or sale. It is a very traditional part of Spain, with traditional Spanish foods so if you plan to travel to Spain either to look for jobs, for your company to trade with companies in Spain, or to learn Spanish and enjoy the Spanish weather then come and take a look.

If you are interested in purchasing a property in Almerimar please visit our sponsor Mirror of the Sun

Almerimar is also one of the largest marinas in Spain with over 2,000 births and excellent boatyard facilities.

  1. John W Says:

    Hi,

So far we have 4 provisional team entries so if you want to take part please get in touch soon to confirm your place. Once we have the following details:

Team name, Name of Captain, contact phone number.

plus your 30 euro entry fee, all of which goes towards looking after the strays, we will add your team to the list of confirmed entries that we will display here and on almerimar24.com.

  2. Chris Marshall Says:

Also, if you want to participate/support but don’t fancy walking around the Marina email Sands about being a marshal.

  3. Francis Says:

Perhaps after visiting 6 bars in order to find the clues, the difficult bit might be actually being able to read them!
I hope the event goes well and is supported by as many as possible. It is an excellent idea and deserves a good turnout. Mucha suerte.

  4. Chris Marshall Says:

Thanks, hopefully we will get the full 18 teams.

People could always drink a soft drink, but I reckon that the majority of the people around here can handle at least 6, plus the ones at the end of the evening to celebrate :-)

  5. John W Says:

Just had our 5th provisional team entry so things are going well. All we need to do now is start collecting the entry fees so we can confirm the entries.

We also have a couple of other possible entries bubbling under so things are looking good with over 4 weeks to go to the event.

  6. Chris Marshall Says:

That certainly is encouraging. Sands spoke to some of the girls at the Gym earlier this evening and I think there was some interest as well.

  7. John W Says:

First team has paid up and is guaranteed entry to the hunt. I´ll keep this list up to date as more teams pay the entry fee.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham

  8. Chris Marshall Says:

OK, I will keep popping the post up to the top of the page every day or so as well :-)

John – thanks, and when I get back from the UK let’s get together to take some pictures of the birds!

  9. Alberto Says:

I have a team so where do I need to send the money?
I am working on a couple more teams. How many vacancies are there at the moment?

  10. John W Says:

    Hi Alberto,

We have around 9 or 10 people saying they have teams so far but only 1 has paid up. So there is room at present. We also have a few more people who say they might be interested as well so hopefully we can get 18 teams. Our job now is to convert interest into teams paying money to support the strays.

Any one of the organisers can arrange to meet up and collect your money. Alternatively, as you have Jacqui´s bank details you could always do a transfer to her account if you wish. We will give you a receipt either way and all money goes to supporting the strays.

It would be good if you could email us with your team name and a contact phone number so we can add you to the list and prepare the starter pack for your team.

If you want to add more teams just do the same as above. We´ll lket you know when we have run out of space.

    John

  11. Chris Marshall Says:

Give it to me Alberto. You want to meet up to watch some of the football tonight or tomorrow? Or maybe the rugby at the weekend?

Thanks for getting a team together and hopefully you can persuade a few more :-)

  12. John W Says:

Just got our second confirmed team for the hunt. Thanks to Debbie from La Bahía for paying the entry fee promptly.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins

  13. Alberto Says:

    Hola again,

Chris, we train tonight so today´s football will be the highlights!
I am not sure about tomorrow as I could have a tennis game. I will let you know. I do not mind where to transfer the money so let me know who I can trust more…;)!

  14. Chris Marshall Says:

Probably best to meet up for the Rugby at the weekend?

Doesn’t matter – as all the money will end up with Sands anyway …….

Whoever you see first, or if you want to transfer to John :-)

  15. wayne jarvis Says:

looking forward to the Treasure Hunt sounds like A great idea.

  16. John W Says:

    Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the encouragement. Much appreciated. If it is a success we hope to look to organise similar events again at some point in the future. It is something that Jacqui and I used to a lot do for worthy causes when we were in the UK. Most of the hunts being in and around central London. It´s fun to look to organise something similar here.

Just checking whether your comment means that you will looking to submit a team soon. If yes, please can you let us know and we will make arrangements for one of the organisers to be in touch to collect your entrance fee and issue you with a receipt etc.

    Thanks,
    John, Jacqui, Chris, Sandra

  17. John W Says:

Jacqui has just collected the money for another team so we now have 3 paid up entries. We still have lots of people saying they will enter teams so if you want to take part then please contact one of us and pay your entry fee soon to guarantee your place.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. TBD. Captain: Alan Sly

Teams that we are aware of that have expressed an interest:

    1. Alberto (maybe 3 in total)
    2. Pam Roberts (2 possible teams)
    3. Christine Perkins
    4. Wayne Jarvis
    5. Richard Dixon
    6. Chris off Drike
    7. Chris Saul

So if those people could confirm as soon as possible …..

The bars have said that they will each contribute 30€ as well if we get the right number of teams ……..

Remember 100% of the money goes to the stray cats and dogs ………..

    Chris, Sandra, Jacqui, John

  18. Chris Marshall Says:

    Cool.

@Alberto – could well be down in the marina for the England match on Saturday

  19. Alberto Says:

    Chris – good idea.

  20. Chris Marshall Says:

Will call you Saturday then :-)

  21. John W Says:

Just got a fourth confirmed team. Thanks to Marianne for entering a team.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. TBD. Captain: Alan Sly
    4. Team Tinto. Captain: Marianne Liljedahl

  22. Chris Marshall Says:

Walked the course (so to speak) yesterday to dry run the clues that John & Jacqui have done. They have done a great job – you will have a lot of fun …… and of course now I know the answers than I am totally open to helping you out on the night for a donation to the fund :-)

A lot of people expressed interest in the event yesterday so it is looking like we will have a good turn out!!!

  23. Chris Marshall Says:

You can add The Long Way Round, Andalucia SL team, captain Chris Soroko. I will get the money off them hopefully tonight, but if not during the week.

  24. John W Says:

Good stuff Chris Saul (team name – Absat) and Larry Rowe (team name – Días Felices) are in the same situation. Should have the money soon and we can then add them to the confirmed entry list as well.

  25. Chris Marshall Says:

Will be Tuesday now – sugest we touch base later in the week to figure out where we are at.

We can figure out the get together to brief the Marshals as well.

  26. Jacqui M Says:

Just got 2 more confirmed teams. Thanks to Chris and Larry for entering teams.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. TBD. Captain: Alan Sly
    4. Team Tinto. Captain: Marianne Liljedahl
    5. Absat. Captain: Chris Saul
    6. Dias Felices. Captain: Larry Rowe

  27. Chris Marshall Says:

    Good stuff.

Alberto has sent me a message about meeting up for rugby later, s hangover permitting (and Sands of course!) I may see him later.

The Long Way Round are committed, just need to get the rest of the money off them this week.

Would have thought that Alcor would have been first up with their cash as Sponsors :-)

  28. Jacqui M Says:

Alcor came in at number 3 on the list as they were working out who would be in the team. I understand it is going to be Alan & Sharon Sly together with two friends, Penny and Walter.

Alan is the husband of Sharon who is a partner in Alcor Properties. Alan is trying to think up a team name at the moment. If he doesn’t come up with anything else they will probably end up calling themselves Alcor.

The other partner in the business, Richard Dixon is contemplating putting in a separate team but this is less certain.

  29. Chris Marshall Says:

    Ah that makes sense :-)

Team Alcor would be a good name I guess.

Think we need to ‘have a word’ with our Richard next time we see him :-) Send the boys round o to speak …….

  30. John W Says:

Just got another confirmed team. Thanks to Wayne and Charmaine for entering a team.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. TBD. Captain: Alan Sly
    4. Team Tinto. Captain: Marianne Liljedahl
    5. Absat. Captain: Chris Saul
    6. Dias Felices. Captain: Larry Rowe
    7. DBJ. Captain: Wayne Jarvis

  31. John W Says:

Two more teams confirmed for the hunt.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. TBD. Captain: Alan Sly
    4. Team Tinto. Captain: Marianne Liljedahl
    5. Absat. Captain: Chris Saul
    6. Dias Felices. Captain: Larry Rowe
    7. DBJ. Captain: Wayne Jarvis
    8. TBD. Captain: Lisa Garside (Still to pay)
    9. Long Way Round. Captain: Chris Soroko (part paid)

  32. Chris Marshall Says:

Kris Soroko has now paid in full!

  33. Sandra Marshall Says:

Had news this am from the yachty quiz night re. teams. One definite and a second definite if the weather doesn’t improve (they were planning to be away sailing). Also Irene is definitely putting in a team of her fitness ladies, and her husband Mike has agreed to be the 6th marshall.
SO we now have 11 definite teams, and I think 4 more possible we are chasing.

  34. John W Says:

    Hi,

Here is an updated list based on Sandra’s comments. It would be good if you could help fill in any details that we haven’t got so far as I am starting to produce the packs for the teams.

    DEFINITES

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. TBD. Captain: Alan Sly
    4. Team Tinto. Captain: Marianne Liljedahl
    5. Absat. Captain: Chris Saul
    6. Dias Felices. Captain: Larry Rowe
    7. DBJ. Captain: Wayne Jarvis
    8. TBD. Captain: Lisa Garside (Still to pay)
    9. Long Way Round. Captain: Kris Soroko
    10. TBD. Captain: Yachting team 1 person? (Still to pay)
    11. TBD. Captain: Irene ? (Still to pay)

    POSSIBLES

    Christine Perkins
    Richard Dixon (and/or John Andrew)
Alberto Canton (possibly more than 1 team)
    Yachting team 2.

Also, if possible, it is worthwhile looking to get pairs of marshals in each bar as it can get quite busy for one person if a lot of teams arrive at the same time. Give us a shout if you are short of people and we’ll look to find some more marshals to help out.

  35. John W Says:

Spent yesterday in the offices of Alcor Properties printing out all of the quiz questions etc. Many thanks to Alcor for the use of the printers and paper.

This means that the packs for the marshals in each bar are now complete.

Still a bit of work to do on preparing all of the packs for the teams. However, these can´t be finalised until we have the final list of teams with team names and captains names. So more work still to do later this week.

  36. John W Says:

Due to family illness Christine Perkins will not be able to get over here in time for the hunt so we need to take her name off the list of possibles.

  37. John W Says:

Richard Dixon has paid and entered a team and Alan Sly has sorted out his team name. So here is the latest list of teams.

    LIST OF CONFIRMED TEAMS.

    1. Simply The Best. Captain: John Witham
    2. La Bahía. Captain: Debbie Tomkins
    3. P. A. W. S. Captain: Alan Sly
    4. Team Tinto. Captain: Marianne Liljedahl
    5. Absat. Captain: Chris Saul
    6. Dias Felices. Captain: Larry Rowe
    7. DBJ. Captain: Wayne Jarvis
    8. Richard and Friends. Captain: Richard Dixon
    9. Long Way Round. Captain: Kris Soroko
    10. Yacht team 1 – details to follow (still to pay)
    11. TBD. Captain: Irene ? (still to pay)
    12. TBD. Captain: Lisa Garside (still to pay)

    POSSIBLES

Alberto Canton (possibly more than one team)
    Yachting team 2

In addition, our friend Julie Morris who is over for a long weekend has donated 20 euros to the fund as well.

Thanks to both Richard and Julie.

  38. Chris Marshall Says:

Excellent. Maybe we can get people that have a place to fill, or people that want to join a team to leave their details here as well.

I know Sands has some info to add to the thread …..

  39. Sandra Marshall Says:

Great news. Lisa is a definite but didn’t have the cash to give Pam today so has promised to give to you in the next couple of days. The Yacht team should pay tomorrow night at the quiz and may end up as 2 teams. In addition Irene has an extra half a team and we have passed some names to her of people who may be interested in filling the gap.
So 14 is looking fairly good as a final number with Alberto still to confirm.

  40. Chris Marshall Says:

Just heard that some neighbours will be entering a team so long as their friends flight arrives OK on Thursday. They will confirm on Thursday.

  41. Chris Marshall Says:

Thanks to Francis for the donation left at La Bahia.

Sands just back from the Net, Chris is trying to put a team together as well.

  42. Chris Marshall Says:

    Latest …..

Shannon is going to help as a marshal and will be at the meeting

Emma is going to join Irene’s team. She has one team only participating.

Two teams hopefully confirming at the quiz night tonight

Alberto has got at least one team – will know more this afternoon.

La Bahia have confirmed they are going to pay 30€ to John on Friday night.

  43. John W Says:

La Plaza offered 30 euros donation a while back and I said to them wait until closer to the event. So will probably get the money off them after our golf drink up there on Friday afternoon.

MacGowans have offered the same as well.

Will try to speak to the other bars soon but if not before when we do the check that all is well on Friday evening.

In the meantime, if either Chris or Sandra is in any of the other bars feel free to speak to them before we get around to it. Just let us know so we don´t hit on them twice.

  44. Sandra Marshall Says:

Ok Irene has signed up one yacht team and has one herself. Details & money to be collected at meeting tonight. Also got some extra donations at quiz night.
2nd yacht team I am told will be complete by Saturday! This will team Driké, Chris southwood: 630 32 22 09.
SO with Alberto’s team we now have 14! Looking Great!
We are waiting on news of one final team today which Pam will chase up tis afternoon.

  45. John W Says:

Good stuff. Is the team Pam is chasing Lisa or someone else?

Will make up the start sheet for Driké now and will make up the others when we have details.

Have just been up at El Ejido with Sharon from Alcor Properties to source a trophy. We have chosen one which should be delivered to their office tomorrow all being well.

It should have space on it to put names of future winners as well on the basis that Jacqui and I would be happy to run a treasure hunt event at least once a year. Will look to get it engraved with the name of the winning team early next week.

If the winners are locals they can keep the trophy and return it for the next time we have a hunt. If they are not locals we can leave it on display in the office at Alcor Properties.

We preferred this approach when we were running hunts back in the UK as over time there was a bit of history attached to the trophy.

Guess we need to confirm the 5.30pm start time on Saturday 29th March at the Piramide with all the team captains in the next day or so. Most of them probably know already but worth checking with them all via phone or email.

  46. Chris Marshall Says:

Someone else – the neigbour I mentioned that was waiting on friends flights.

More than happy to make this an annual event :-) Whatever you say regards the Trophy etc – you know me, struggle to get my mind around next week never mind next year :-)

  47. John W Says:

My mind is already thinking about the next almerimar24 Almerimar event.

Likely to be a music quiz in aid of Francis House Childrens Hospice in Manchester.

Our friends John and Roisin do a lot of work for this charity so it would be good to help them out and try to raise a bit of money.

  48. Chris Marshall Says:

    Sounds good.

We will stick to the one cause of the Stray Animals here in Almerimar. We do other ‘personal’ charity support/stuff for a number of causes, but as far as physical resource and the blog is concerned want all our efforts to go on the one cause.

  49. John W Says:

We are happy to keep treasure hunt events we do in Almerimar as joint ones between the two sites in support of the strays if that is OK with you.

We will then do separate events for other causes as and when we feel up to it.

  50. Chris Marshall Says:

    Sure, that would be great.

I think initially we want to make this event work (you have been great in helping out – seriously couldn’t have done it without you) and then make it an annual event – the longer we have to plan the ‘bigger’ we can make it.

We also want to try and do a 1/4ly event i.e. Poker Run, Car Boot Sale, whatever. The more people that are willing to help the better – it isn’t something that we want to compete over at all.

  51. Alberto Says:

Chris, if you are thinking in getting bigger you should start thinking in creating an asociation or something similar to give it a bit of formality. People and big companies could help with highers amounts of money if they know they are donating to something more settled. Do not take me wrong, you are doing a great job, but some people do not like to give money to individuals.
    See you on saturday!

  52. Chris Marshall Says:

I am sure that you are right but is as we say a Catch 22! Setting up a ‘charity’ adds cost, time and resource. Associating with something already in existence takes it way from the specific area of Almerimar – and that has to remain the focus in my view.

Maybe we can set up a group of people with an ‘administrator’ to handle the money. I am not at all bothered who handles the money – I just want to get as much as we can and for 100% to go the animals :-)

I know that people don’t always feel comfortable as you say and I respect that. Need to find a way around it I guess – which we will.

See you tonight maybe at the wine tasting?

  53. Alberto Says:

Have training tonight so I am not sure if I´ll go to the wine tasting.

  54. Chris Marshall Says:

Then I will ’sip and spit’ on your behalf :-)

  55. Alex Adamson-Leigh Says:

I understand that the Treasure Hunt organised in aid of stray cats was a great success. Many congratulations to all those who contributed, took part and organised the event. I understand that there is now a proposal for the community to become involved in raising money for a Manchester based charity. Why? Most of us live in Spain so perhaps we should consider a Spanish charity.

  56. Chris Marshall Says:

It was indeed a great success.

Afraid I can’t comment on the event relating to Manchester as it has nothing at all to do with us or this site.

As far as this site goes we have decided that 100% of any fund raising activities we get involved in will be for the stray animals.

We are planning one more event this year in Sep/Oct that will be based around a school sports day, and maybe a much smaller social gathering around Xmas.

I have had a lot of people say to me that they don’t understand or agree with the Manchester idea, but as I said nothing to do with us or this site.

  57. Alex Adamson-Leigh Says:

I understand your comments on the Manchester proposal but hope such an event will not impact on the good work your group has done. I´m not sure if another event so soon after the Treasure Hunt is a good idea. My experience in organising charity events suggests that when they are repeated too often they tend to lose their appeal. Perhaps a bigger and better event next year might be preferable? Either way, I wish you every success in whatever you decide to do to help the stray cats.

  58. Chris Marshall Says:

I agree another event would be too soon, but can’t do anything about anybody else wanting to hold an event.

My ‘guess’ is that a general apathy towards the event (based on feedback I have received) means it wont take place.

I think an event every 6 months would be about right in the ‘market’ especially as a lot of people ‘come and go’ so we wouldn’t necessarily be tapping into the same pockets every time.

  59. apartment rent Says:

I have just seperated from my wife and I have to find an apartment rent on a very short notice in bangalore. Anybody can suggest a clean apartment rental complex near downtown?
