Travel Insurance
April 23rd, 2008 - Sandra MarshallWe are always happy to publish, views and insights from readers of the blog on a wide range of subjects. Here Alex Adamson-Leigh discusses travel insurance:
Just a word on the travel insurance currently offered by many brokers, holiday companies and airlines. For over 40 years as a lawyer I spent much of my professional life fighting insurance claims on behalf of clients. My conclusion is that insurance companies will try almost anything NOT to pay out on any claim if they can find a reason. Even in cases of genuine and proper claims insurers will fight their corner to the bitter end. So when you buy any insurance, particularly related to travel, read the small print carefully and assume a claim will not be paid. If your claim is genuine stick to your guns and don´t accept their first offer if you feel that it is unfair. Threaten with reports to the Insurance Ombudsmen , consumer magazines or TV programmes and as a last resort a court of law. There are now an increasing number of lawyers who will act on a “no win – no fee basis. Without exception over the years I found that a heavy handed approach produced better results but you´ll have to fight hard and don´t be put off.
Of course insurers´ will disagree with me, but they would wouldn’t they? Buying insurance is the same as placing a bet with a bookmaker. You are betting that you will not make a claim and the stake is called a premium. Do you know any poor bookmakers.
I would be interested to know if anyone here in Almerimar, or any reader for that matter had positive or negative experiences to share.
