Tipping In Spain

January 22nd, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

I was reading a funny article about characteristics of the Spanish, and along with the comment that Spaniards will only eat bananas that come from the Canary Islands, I found a useful tip about ‘tipping’.

Apparently Spanish people almost never tip on a Menu del Día.

“There is no need to tip if you have the set, 3 course Menu del Día lunch. We know that tipping in Spain is by no means obligatory (5% is about right for good service at dinner), but few people will tip for one of these marvelously good value lunches.”

So now you know!

    Ha!!!

Tipping should be voluntary, unpressured and for service over and above what you would expect!!!

Sorry but this is a hobby horse of mine!!!! When you go out to eat you expect to pay more than if you had bought and prepared the food yourself, but that premium includes serving it to you - after all who would sit in a restaurant and pay for their food to be left in the kitchen!!!

A bit like commercialisation of Christmas with kids asking for and execting more and more, the tip is totally redundant now. A tip should be voluntary and at the discretion of the customer, not somethimg people feel pressured into leaving.

They should call it what it is - a Service Tax because employers can’t be bothered to pay their staff a decet wage in the first place.
