The ‘Twitchiker’ reaches New Zealand
March 27th, 2009 - Chris MarshallAs a self confessed twitter addict I loved this story!
A British man who set out to see how far he could travel relying only on the goodwill of people that use the social networking site, Twitter, has reached New Zealand
Paul Smith, 33, a journalist from Newcastle, is attempting to reach Campbell Island, a Unesco World Heritage Site off the coast of New Zealand, by Monday. He is using the trip to raise money for the organisation Charity: Water, which helps bring clean and safe drinking water to developing nations.
He set himself a 30-day limit for his journey, and decided that he would only accept offers of travel and accommodation from people who use the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Since setting out on March 1, he has visited Holland, France and Germany and the United States, from where he caught a free flight from Los Angeles to Auckland. He is hoping that, in the two days before his deadline, he will reach Campbell Island, around 400 miles from the mainland.
Mr Smith limited himself to making travel plans no more than three days in advance and to spending a maximum of two days in each destination. He has also decided that if he is unable to find a way to move on from a location within 48 hours, he has failed the challenge and has to return home.
Nearly 10,000 people are following his progress on his Twitter page and he has raised more than £3,000 in online donations (Via Expat Life Spain)
