The Post in Almerimar
January 4th, 2008 - Chris MarshallGenerally the post service here is pretty good. They deliver most days but not on Sundays or Bank Holidays.
However, there are some issues:
1. Finding somewhere to post letters
There are not many post boxes in Almerimar. The one I use is the yellow box which is just across the zebra crossing from Cajamar bank on Darsena 3. I´m sure there are probably others but this is the only one I know of. If anyone knows of others then please comment on this item and add the details.
2. Collecting items
After a while you start to dread receiving a note in your letter box from the post person marked Correos on the left hand side with Aviso de Llegada written along the top. This is notice that they say they have tried to deliver something to you but you were not here to sign. This happens very often so my guess is that on some occasions they just bring the notice rather than the letter or package itself.
When you receive such a notice you have to turn up at the post office in El Ejido to collect the package or envelope (normally within something like a week of when they attempted to deliver).
To get to the post office go straight across the motorway past Copo and keep going into Santa Domingo. Past Lidl on your right, further down a school on your right and finally past Radiovision on your right. At the next roundabout turn left into the main high street (Carretera de Malaga). You can´t miss the turning as the roundabout is at the foot of the very large tower they are building in El Ejido.
Go straight along the high street across a few roundabouts until you see an entrance to an underground car park on your right. If you want you can park in this car park and walk about 5 minutes to the post office. However, if you are brave you can try to drive there.
If you wish to drive then go past the underground car park and take the first turning you can turn up on the right (it is actually the second road after the underground car park as the first turning is one way in the wrong direction).
You should see a sign to Correos just before the turning (they have only just put it back again - it fooled us last time as they had taken it down). Follow this road past the Bodega de Jamon on your left being careful at the crossroads. I´m sure there are lots of accidents because the right of way isn´t obvious. At the top of the road there is a small square with a church in it. The post office (Correos) is on the road on the other side of the square.
Beware, as it is very difficult to find a parking space around this area and the roads are quite narrow. Also, you have a bit of a job finding your way back out from the post office to the road back to Almerimar.
When you arrive at the post office, make sure that you have some form of picture identification to prove your identity (NIE, passport etc.). You will have to show this, sign and date the Aviso slip you were posted and add your NIE or passport number on the slip.
