The British Emigrating

December 29th, 2007 - Sandra Marshall

We’re always hearing about the increasing number of immigrants in the UK, but it is the rate of emigration that is currently going up year on year, and after Australia and New Zealand, Spain is still high up in the choice of countries. I found an interesting article this week that talked about who and why people are leaving Britain and which age groups are going where.

We hear so much on TV and in magazines about the number of expats heading for France and Spain, but this makes up only 24% of the exodus; 32 % head for Australia and New Zealand and it is to these countries that the youngsters are heading.

“Those going to France or Spain tend to be in the 45 to 65 age group, are retired or semi-retired and are looking for an easier lifestyle. Those going to Australia, New Zealand and Canada tend to be young professionals of above-average income who either have been offered a job or who are disillusioned with the UK and are looking for a better lifestyle.”

Obviously property prices are a big factor in why people leave the UK and which country they head to, and the article deals with the property market in the most favoured destinations. When it comes to Spain:

“It is still possible to get some great deals on the Spanish Costas - Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, particularly - says Andy Hawkins from Chesterton International. For new-build, always buy through a reputable house builder. “The most expensive areas are around Marbella,” says Barbara Wood of The Property Finders. “For lower prices consider going to the east of Malaga, into the Nerja region where prices are around 30 per cent lower. The same is true on the Costa de la Luz, but the climate is cooler as it faces the Atlantic.” Andalucia has seen the biggest price rises for the past five years, while if you drive just 20 minutes inland prices can be 50 per cent less.”

This highlights again the recent rise in property prices here in Almerimar, Andalucia. To read more click below:
