Tanning In The 20th Century
April 28th, 2008 - Sandra MarshallI read an interesting article yesterday on the changing attitudes to tanning in the 20th century:
Before the 20th century, those who could shunned the sun. The fashion was for delicately pale, nearly translucent skin; anything darker was decidedly déclassé. Only the poor were tanned. The Times
It was in the mid 20s when the poor became pale, having forsaken the fields for sunless factories, that tanning became fashionable, helped along by Coco Chanel who started a craze when she accidentally got tanned whilst yachting! However ´healthy tanning´ had already been widely talked about, as the first sun clinic was opened in the Swiss Alps in 1903 to treat diseases with the restorative powers o fresh air and sunlight.
Hot summers in the 1920s then started the health and leisure fad of sunbathing and the popular fixation with the seaside, and it was the nudists who became the first modern sun-worshippers, “sunbather” for a long time being a euphemism for nudist! This was a lot to do with what was accepted a decent bathing attire in polite society. However this was the time when sunbathing became a leisure pursuit of choice rather than medical necessity.
A history of tanning discusses how attitudes have changed over the century. People have now become so obsessed with the sun that it is avoiding it that has become the health recommendation of today. However it is important to remember that a little protected sun is actually very good for you.
For me, living in Almerimar, has actually made sunbathing less appealing in a way. When I just had a few weeks a year in a sunny climate I would take the opportunity to catch those rays, but now with sunshine virtually all year round I tend to sunbathe hardly at all, and just get a little tanned whilst walking around.
