Taking your pet back to the UK

April 26th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Here is some advice from Emma for anybody looking to take a pet back to the UK:

Recently having decided to return to the UK, one of the things that we were faced with was how best to deal with our small dog who we adopted here in Spain shortly after we arrived four and a half years ago.

Basically in order to get your pet’s passport, the dog has to have a blood test to screen for rabies antibodies. The results of which take 4 months to come back and provided the results are favourable the animal can enter the UK without the need for quarantine, 6 months from the date of the blood test. This blood test although a bit traumatic for the dog, costs just 70€ and once it has been done and the 6 months is up, provided of course that the results are favourable, your pet is free to travel back and forth provided they continue to have their regular rabies inoculations.

If however you end up needing to travel back to the UK before the end of the six months it can prove very expensive. It can cost around £250 per month to keep a dog in quarantine in the UK plus there is a fee for transporting your pet from the airport or sea port to the quarantine kennels which can also run into the hundreds.

You could decide to leave your dog in kennels here for the 6 months and then transport him back. However flights for pets can also be very expensive. To fly just a dog back from Malaga to Manchester at the end of the 6 month period, we were quoted £500 no less! Needless to say it works out much cheaper to drive and take them on the ferry but if you do that then bear in mind that you then have the hassle of driving all the way over to Spain and back again just to collect your beloved pet!

Advice to those with a pet here, that haven’t already done so, if you think there is even the remotest chance that you will want or need to take them back to the UK at some point, then get the passport thing done now, it could save you a lot of money.

    taking pets back to UK
In 2000 we drove back to the UK with our 2 ginger moggies - what a performance that was - we had to find THE VET for the area - hidden away in a big official building in the plastics and get this special form for travel signed and stamped - it was the first one he had done at the time and thank goodness we had a Spanish speaking friend with us to help out - he made endless mistakes on the form and we were there for hours - that is after a number of wasted journeys to see him.We eventually set off and let the cats free in the car - Bugsy wound herself around John’s neck and Moll sat quietly on my knee for most of the journey. We stopped off at a hotel in Zaragoza and the hotel owner felt sorry for the cats having been stuck in the car and gave us a top floor suite - so that they could run around.Well run around they certainly did - on beds, under beds. on wardrobes behind units - it took us hours to catch the little buggers and set off again. When we got to Calais we had to find a local vet and have them wormed - this had to be done within 24 hours of leaving Spain/France - that cost an arm and a leg but finally got the paperwork done and cats wormed. Then there was the performance of going thru the Animal Customs - they paid attention to every single detail and vaccination report on their Passports - we were just waved thru.We had to get the cats back into their carrying baskets once thru Customs and that took some doing. However the journey back was quite painless and there was no hassle with them at all.Staying in my son’s flat with his resident moggy was another story as he wasnt at all happy with my two but that is another story. Good luck Emma with your trip.

    - Can anyone tell me if it´s true that it takes about 4 months to get the blood test result from the lab in Spain? Our dog´s blood test was done on 29th March, so in theory, the 6 months is up on 29th September, and we would like to return to the the UK then. However, we still haven´t received the results from the lab - nearly 4 months later. Our vet here in Barcelona says that they can´t do anything until the test results come back from the lab in Granada - so we don´t know if we can go ahead and book our flights etc for returning to the UK. Is it possible that the lab results could take longer than 6 months?? I´d like to start organizing our move but am worried that we book everything only to be kept waiting by the lab results. I´m also wondering if the vets here know how to fill out the passport etc when it does arrive - and do they charge for doing this? (We´ve already paid for the blood test etc) Thanks!

Hi I know my neighbour waited over 4 months to get the results back for her dog. It was then fairly straightforward to get the passport document done at the vets, although there was a charge, and I understand that you also need photos of the animal, so it is worth making sure you have everything ready for when the results do come back.

Thanks for that …we´ve just been told today that the resultsare back - so it´s all go now! Phew! Am pleased we have them now as with the sunmmer holidays almost upon us…. anyway - now I have to work out where to get an “official” container for my dog, DEFRA approved etc - does anyone know? I also phoned Monarch, the only airline operating with the PETS scheme that flies to the UK outside London (we want to go to Newcastle - this gets us to Manchester at least) and they said it´s 470 pounds to fly my dog! Only 50 euros for me - what a difference! Is thi the norm? Also, does anyone know how long it takes once you are in the UK, as far as getting youe dog back etc - we need to book a train from Manchester back to Newcastle and I don´t know what time to book the train for….anyone have any experience with all of this? It would be much appreciated! Thank you and a wag of my dog´s tail!

Sorry, has taken a while!!! Have you tried the dog home at La Mojanera as they ship dogs all the time, or even a good Vet (the one here may be able to help as I know of people that have taken their animals back).

Flights are expensive, I know our friends decided to drive back in the end with their dog.

No idea how long at the other end, but having seen dogs and cats come off the planes before I think they are about as quick as the luggage, so no specific delay.
