Spain credit rating downgraded to negative

December 10th, 2009

Spain has had its credit outlook cut to negative from stable by the ratings agency Standard & Poor’s.
Which will probably mean a deeper deterioration in public finances, so a longer recession than originaly forecast. The markets reacted badly to the news as well.
Spain is still in recession and the government has launched a massive public [...]

November 25th, 2009

Despite making easy profits it appears that Telefonica need to raise some cash to refinance debts that mature in 2010 …. that will be them and about half the world then!
Yesterday Telefonica placed bonds worth 720€m into the market:
The debt made yesterday placed within 13 years, thereby “improving the maturity profile, half-life lengthens and increases [...]

The euro was trading at $1.4883 on Thursday, slightly above the 6-month low of $1.4815 struck earlier this week. Earlier this year, the euro was trading at $1.60.
Sterling touched a 22-month low of $1.8619 in Thursday trading.
The pound dropped sharply on Wednesday after the Bank of England issued its gloomiest assessment yet of the health [...]

15 Year High For Inflation In Spain

August 13th, 2008

Prices in Spain rose at their fastest annual rate for 15 years in July, driven by rising food and fuel costs.
The annual inflation rate climbed to 5.3% in July, up from 5% in June.
Transport costs were 10.6% higher than a year earlier, the National Institute of Statistics said, with food prices up 7% compared with [...]

Worth Considering A Euro Account?

April 29th, 2008

With the Euro continuing to strengthen, expats with fixed incomes coming from the UK may want to think of a way of ensuring that things don´t get any worse. Whilst life may be cheaper here in Almerimar for one, it is still concerning, and maybe time to look at how to make the most of [...]

Travel Insurance

April 23rd, 2008

We are always happy to publish, views and insights from readers of the blog on a wide range of subjects. Here Alex Adamson-Leigh discusses travel insurance:
Just a word on the travel insurance currently offered by many brokers, holiday companies and airlines. For over 40 years as a lawyer I spent much of my professional [...]

Euro hits record peak against the $

April 22nd, 2008

I recently wrote about the inflation in the ‘euro zone’ so I guess it is no surprise that the € has now reached $1.60 as people expect even higher interest rates in the ‘euro zone’
It rose as high as $1.6002 as weak US housing market data underscored fears over the health of the US economy. [...]

Almerimar Property – Financial Matters

March 19th, 2008

For anyone who has decided to buy a property in Spain, as with anywhere else, there are a number of financial considerations over and above the sale price. I have already discussed annual costs and sales taxes in my previous articles; in addition interest rates, if you are taking out a loan are an important [...]

Britain Overtakes The US

January 10th, 2008

Ok here’s one for Britons at home and expats alike: “For the first time in more than a century the standard of living in Britain is higher than in America, according to a new report. Analysts at the respected Oxford Economics consultancy say that increasing incomes, free healthcare and longer holidays make the average Briton [...]

Tax & Those Trips Home

January 2nd, 2008

Following on from my article at the end of November: Watch Those Trips To The UK, today I read another interesting article about the tax implications of being considered ‘resident’ in the UK.
The key point in the previous article was that the government plans from April to change the residency rules. “At present, if you [...]

Spanish Inheritance Tax

December 17th, 2007

Hopefully this article will answer some of the questions you may have about “Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones (ISD), the Spanish equivalent of inheritance tax.
This is due on “assets and rights, which are located, enforceable, or executable in Spain”. Sounds a little complicated, but for most of us the asset is simple and is our [...]

Expat Pensions Abroad

December 15th, 2007

I found this a really comprehensive article, clarifying the pension situation for expats who retire abroad. All seems to be well within the EEA (European Economic Area), but as outlined in previous articles, outside the EEA things are a little more problematic.
“Expats may have left British shores either temporarily or permanently, but there are still [...]

Expats Love Internet Banking

December 10th, 2007

Personally I love Internet banking! I have always been a bit of a control freak, particularly where money is concerned (ex Monoploy banker … EVERY game!), and find it fantastic that I can get an instant picture of all my financial stuff. Even better while we were travelling a lot, I had no need for [...]
