Spain General Election Results

March 11th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Following on from my article on Saturday about the forthcoming elections, I read a great results article online yesterday, so thought I would post some extracts:

Anyone interested will have picked up that the ruling Socialists have won a second term but not convincingly.

“While Mr Zapatero’s socialist party picked up seats in the lower house, it fell short of a majority and will have to form some sort of an alliance with smaller regional parties in order to govern. But while Mr Zapatero’s socialist party picked up seats in the lower house, it fell short of a majority and will have to form some sort of an alliance with smaller regional parties in order to govern.”

The conservative opposition party took solace in the fact that they have actually picked up more new seats than the socialists, (both at the expense of smaller leftist and regional groups), giving them 40.1% of the vote counted to the socialists 43.8%.

“The results appeared to be an endorsement of Mr Zapatero’s record, which included reforms like legalising gay marriage and granting on-demand divorce, once thought unthinkable in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country. The PM also withdrew Spanish troops from Iraq after he was first elected in 2004 – in the wake of the Madrid bombings – and launched a drive to cede more power to Spain’s semiautonomous regions.”

Mr Zapatera said after his party’s victory:

“”The Spanish people have spoken clearly and decided to start a new era. I will govern with a firm but open hand … I will govern for all, but do so thinking most of all of those in need.”
