Spain 1 Germany 0 The Final in Al-rruz Almerimar

June 30th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!YES!!!!!

What an excellent evening!!! Before I try and tell you all about it let me say two things:

  1. THANK YOU Al-rruz for a truly excellent tournament, you did a great job and deserve all the praise (and new business) that I am sure you will get, and
  2. I have no idea what time I got home, but it was (very) late, or should I say early!!!!

This is a long post in that video is just under 25 minutes long and we took over 60 pictures (don’t worry they aren’t all in this post) so I suggest you go and grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy the video and rest of the post.

As you will see we walked around the square first which was really buzzing. Flags, horns, painted faces everyone was getting in the mood, and it was a great atmosphere. Bumped into loads of people (as usual) and talked to Roberto for a while about his holiday and some work we are doing together.

We had decided to order a Mixed Paella for just before the match and that worked out to be a great idea – excellent paella as usual and a perfect way to get right into the mood. I have to say that throughout the tournament I have been aware more than ever at how integrated we have become into Almerimar, and how well it has become our ‘home’. We met many new people throughout the last three weeks, some readers of the site, others English people that have been here for a while, and of course we made a load more Spanish amigos!!!

The game was very similar to the Russia game in that Spain really where all over Germany from the very start and they totally deserved to win. It was a little edgy with only the 1 goal lead, but with 15 minutes to go the drums started up and you just got the sense that they knew it was there time.

Final whistle was like a explosion – hugs, champagne, kisses, high fives and a mass out pouring of relief. The square was soon buzzing as people went from bar to bar seeking their friends and basically anyone to have a drink with. At one stage I was wandering around with the video camera and a couple of bottles of Cava. Sands did a great job taking some pictures of the celebrations.

Sands wanted to get back for the cats so I sat outside AL-rruz for an hour with some friends and then helped Inés and Juan Carlos to tidy up, in return for a couple of extremely large JD and Diets – so that was Beer, Red Wine, Vodka, Cava and JD!!! We then wandered over to Fossil with Angel (their waiter) so I could buy them all a drink. Had a good chat with Roberto, and bumped into one of the girls who lives on the same floor as us. All very friendly and loud!!!! Had a couple more with Juan Carlos and Inés then for some reason I decided that I wanted to see what was going on at Loch Ness ……

No idea what time I got home, but I didn’t get up until 4pm!!!

Overall a excellent evening to round off a perfect tournament. I am certainly ready for a bit of a rest and a health kick for a couple of months.

Last thing Juan Carlos said to me was that they were going to put a plaque on the floor where the ‘Luck Table’ had been as a permanent reminder.
