San Juan
June 23rd, 2007 - Chris MarshallTonight is the celebration of San Juan here in Almerimar.
It is an evening of celebration on the beach where both sides will be filled with many bonfires and groups of people cooking, drinking and eating.
Each year I am impressed with how quickly it all gets set up. Nothing really happens until later in the afternoon when the council dump lots of pallets and wood on the beach, and around 9pm the bonfires start getting built. There is never any trouble and it is normal for all generations to mix together - a very big family event. It is fun to have a BBQ with friends, it is equally fun just to walk along the beach and join in with the people - everyone is very welcoming.
At midnight, tradition (and alcohol) dictates that you take a nude swim in the sea. Many people stay up all night and watch the sun come up, last year we stayed on the beach until 4am.
By mid morning the next day all signs of the party are tidied away and the beach is back to normal, a very impressive event.
I am nor sure what my plans are this year. I will be picking my parents up at the airport this afternoon, and Sands is away. I am having a meal tonight with my parents in Al-rruz, and will at least walk along the beach for a while with them later. I may then drop them back at the apartment and go out to one of the bonfires.
If you have any plans share them here.
