Ryanir: Standing Room Only!

July 6th, 2009 - Chris Marshall

Sorry but I just couldn’t resist re publishing this story from Expat Life Spain. O’Leary has way surpassed Branson for his ability to generate headlines:

Ryanair is considering proposals to make some of its customers stand during flights.

“The low-cost airline would charge passengers less on “bar stools” with seat belts around their waists.

Michael O’Leary, the chief executive, has already held talks with US plane manufacturer Boeing about designing an aircraft with standing room.

He is now seeking approval from the Irish Aviation Authority before ordering a new fleet of carriers, according to The Sun.

A Ryanair spokesman told the newspaper: “If they approve it, we’ll be doing it.”

Mr O’Leary is reported to have got the idea from the Chinese airline Spring, which has put forward similar plans. It estimates space could be made for up to 50 per cent more passengers and costs could be cut by 20 per cent.

It is not the first time Ryanair has come up with a controversial proposal for cutting costs. Earlier this year Mr O’Leary suggested passengers could be charged £1 to use the on-board lavatories.

In an interview on BBC television he said that the low-cost airline was looking at the possibility of installing a coin slot on the lavatory door so that “people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny.”

Mr O’Leary also considered introducing a “fat tax” for overweight passengers. “

Maybe they will next offer a cheap option to crate up and send your family like animals in the hold!!! Actually Ryanair don’t take animals at all which is frustrating, as the lovely German couple who came to visit the 2 kittens they are adopting from us, would have taken them back with them.

Trying to think what they’ll charge for next. Seatbelts? (@stanaway)

Oh dear oh dear, maybe the pets are the lucky ones Sandra???

As for next, I reckon they will have whip round before each flight to pay for the pilot!

It seems like many of the airline related injuries come from people hitting their heads, especially if they’re not wearing their seatbelts.

I can’t imagine how standing passengers with no seatbelts would be a good idea. Unless of course the standing are is a giant padded room, and even then it doesn’t really sound like a good idea.

But I do agree with the post author, who ever came up with this sensationalistic idea sure does know how to get their name in the papers.

  7. John Says:

The problem is that at this rate they will be the only option to fly to Almeria, although they don’t yet do they apart from from Dublin?

  8. Jennifer Says:

Would rather drive than fly with these Cowboys!

Maybe they will install a big bouncy cancel full of those soft balls you get in kids play areas ….. now that would actually be a pretty cool way to fly!

LOL that actually would be pretty cool.
