R.I.P. Orla (Baby C) …… We Miss You!!!

November 26th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

We are VERY sad, but this afternoon we have had to put Orla down. We had an Xray and then an echo cardio and found out that she had a genetic problem cardio myopothy. No operation possible (humans would need a transplant) and she would have only lived a few years with medicine 2 times a day, and even then not really healthy. Not good but still a very hard decision. We will all miss her and Mori too. Just unlucky for her and us.

That just wasn’t an option for a cat that had such a joy of live so we took the decision to have her put down. She was purring right to the end and the vet and staff were really graceful about it all.

Now we need to ‘explain’ to Mori especially and Saidi that there little buddy has gone. We only had her for a short time but she was such a beautiful cat in every way.

She will be missed but never forgotten.

RIP Orla we all loved you xxxxxx

My thoughts are with you and Sands with your loss. Alice and I have always had dogs and when it came to their time, it was a heavy hearted loss. Time will help.

  4. Jennifer Says:

So very sad that you had to have Orla put down. Although you did not have her very long you both have some happy memories and super videos of her .

    We share your sadness.

  5. Kenny L in NJ Says:

I’m so sorry for your loss. To those who haven’t experienced what you’re going through, the depth of what you feel cannot be fathomed. People become VERY attached to pets. They ARE loved ones. The sense of loss is the same as when one loses a spouse, child, or parent. Perhaps even more so, given the sense of dependency that pets have for their owners. All they want is love, and they make very few demands beyond food.

Time, fortunately, does heal all wounds. Yours will heal, but it won’t be today or tomorrow. Just know that people out there do know and understand your circumstance, and will be supportive in any way they can.

We are really, really sorry. I don’t find in English the best words for say it to you. If you need anything, please, tell us.

    We all(Al-rruz)are sorry.

Many kisses from us to you both.

  7. John Says:

    Oh dear. How very sad.

Orla seemed such a lovely little puss. We enjoyed every picture/video and felt we knew her well. She gave us so much pleasure and I know she was best friends with both of you. We do have some good images to go with our memories.

  8. Chris Marshall Says:

ALL – thanks!!! She wasn’t with us for long but boy did she leave an impression. Tonight is really hard. Mori is missing her so much. He is sniffing everywhere that she used to be, and right now wont leave the bag alone that we took her to the vet in.

She was so happy this morning, but we know it couldn’t have lasted, and she was purring and with people that loved her at the end.

    The vet was brilliant!!!!

  9. Sandra Marshall Says:

I’m even more impressed with her playfulness and love of life now that I know how ill she really was. She was very special! I’m just glad that we got the chance to make her so happy for a few weeks.

That is so sad!!! She seemed very cute and very happy with you guys. You did a great job with her and I am sure she was very happy with you in the short time she was with you.

    Don’t give up heart!!!

  15. Mags Says:

    Hi Chris & Sandie,

I was very very sorry to read about poor wee Orla – I know how you both must be feeling at this moment in time.

I have ben in the same situation where I had to put my cat Gunner to sleep as she had the adult version of polio and only part of her brain would function, sometimes she would go out and hide for days, forgetting to eat and groom herself so the vet made us realise that she would not ever get any better, only worse and if she were ever attacked by a fox or wild cat, she might even “forget” how to defend herself. It was so hard but I knew it was the right thing to do.

I met Sandie at Sun Sport gym, we would sometimes have a coffee after class, so HI Sandie, and well done on the fantastic job you do for the Almerimar Strays. I am in Turkey at the moment but once I get back to Almerimar for good, I will come and see you and help out in any way I can with the stray cats too. We hope to be in Amerimar for New Year so I shall probably see you out and about.

    Keep up the good work.

    Take Care

    Hi Chris

Have been following Orla since you got her – I am really sorry to hear your news. I really feel for you both it is such a hard decision to make. We lost our dog over a year ago and still miss her terribly – she was just like one of the children.

Keep up with all the good work with the cats. My son has now rescued three cats, who would have otherwise either been put to sleep or left to their own devises on the streets.

  18. Mary Says:

I suspect Mori will be looking for her for days to come. Has Saidi reacted in any way? You have lots of lovely video clips to remember her by.

  19. Pam Roberts Says:

It is so very sad especially after all the care and love you devoted to Orla – this is the big big problem with cats and dogs – they find special places in your heart and it is devastating when they die and I am sure your other cats will grieve but you can hold onto the fact that her short life with you was fantastic – she was already in ‘cat heaven’.

  20. Chris Marshall Says:

    Again, thanks to everyone!!!

Mori has really missed her so far. He found the bag that we used to take her to the vet last night on a shelf and tried to climb up. When we put it on the floor he sniffed all over it and kept getting in it.

When he woke up this morning on the bed he didn’t rush out but instead curled up and then went looking for her.

This morning we have been playing with him a lot and he is OK but he keeps going back to see where she is. At the moment he is playing with some toys that we bought for her but never got the chance to give her as she was ill and then just wanted to play with Mori.

Saidi on the other hand is straight back to her pre Orla days. She is playing more (with Mori a little) and was far happier on the bed last night)

So I guess Mori and Saidi are balancing each other out so far.

Really sorry for yours, and the other little ones in your house, loss. Today is Thanksgiving over here in the states. One of the traditions, as you probably know with your Florida connections, is that we sit around before the meal and say what we are thankful for. I suppose this is where you say that you are thankful that you had the short time to know her. Doesn’t make it any easier, I know. But I do know. I do know that there is an incredible amount of people here supporting you and what you do, and that is something that can lift your spirits at a time like this and know that your doing something right. We can all be thankful for what you offer to the strays of Almerimar. Take care, Sands. (You too, Chris!)

  25. Chris Marshall Says:

Well we have had some good ones for sure!!!!

It is a shame that you wont get to meet her at Xmas.

It is strange, we only had her for such a short time but she made such a huge impression and I have a feeling will leave quite a legacy. Maybe that was destined to be her role in her short life ……….

  26. David Jackson Says:

A terrible shame. But at least you have the memories, and little O didn’t have to suffer on the streets.

  27. Sandra Marshall Says:

Thank you for all the brilliant, kind comments. Having a quiet day as feel very sad for little Orla. In her way she loved life but it was just not meant to be. Also there is a big hole today, I think made worse by the amount of time we have spent trying to make her healthy. I am missing having her to take care of.

  28. Roberto Says:

Sorry about the cat. Say greetings to Sands, she has done everything she can!

  29. Eric Says:

Sorry to hear that. We have a dog and fishes. And I love all of them.

  30. Tom Says:

Sorry to hear about Orla. Never nice to have loved ones/pets pass on, especially so close to christmas.

  31. Mary Upham Says:

    Hey Chris,

Sorry about your cat. That kind of decision is never easy. I’ve had to put a pet down a couple times over the years and the hole they leave is always bigger than you think it will be.

    Keep in touch.

  32. Jeremy Says:

Sorry to hear this Chris, two of our guinea pigs have died in the last week, the first seemed in great shape then the next morning we found him dead, the second died last night but looked pretty poorly yesterday evening. Our other two seem fine… hopefully!!

  33. Dorothy Says:

Chris, so sorry to hear about Orla; it’s hard to lose companions.

I am sorry that you have lost a good friend. How lucky nowadays to have all the memories stored and to hand. She has obviously brought you some grat pleasure.

The smiles that she brought are all that you will remember!

    SALUD

  37. Richard Says:

We both felt for your loss of Orla last week as Claire and I lost our beloved Charlie of 14 years now we have Carly, so time and other cats are a great healer.

  38. Chris Marshall Says:

The videos and photos are a great reminder. Seeing her photo every day on the computer screen is a bitter/sweet memory though!
