Rioting Roquetas

September 7th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Seems all wasn’t well in Roquetas over the weekend with Police and Firemen getting stuck into a groupd of Gypsies (Gitanos) and North Africans (Marroquies).

It appears that a gitano stabbed a marroqui in a fight – the marroqui died of the wound before getting to hospital. In an apparent revenge attack, a group of his friends proceeded to torch the gitanos house, and the neighbours, before proceeding to attack a group of gitanos who came to put the fire out.

Although arrests have been made the suspected murder is still at large. This all brings back memories of the 2000 El Ejido riots after a Marroqui killed a Spanish woman.

I see the BBC reported on this as well.

According to Mr Jackson the riots spilled over into Sunday as well!!!

Sunday saw another disturbed night in the “200 Viviendas” area of Roquetas del Mar as roaming groups of North Africans (Marroquis as the Spanish press call them) clashed with groups of ethnic Gypsies (Gitanos). Guardia Civil anti riot police tried to enforce a full curfew in the area as from 22.00 hours onwards, but were unable to prevent several bloody clashes between the groups.

There were also reports of barricades being put up, some of which were charged by the antidisturbios riot police.

A quieter night last night as over 100 anti riot police and a helicopter patrolled the area. Miguel Corpas promises to keep the units there until order is restored.

    Cheers Dave.

Maybe we should look at some reciprocal news posting about our respective areas on our blogs?

The Guardia Civil have pulled their fingers out and found the (alleged) murderer!
