My Week As A Tourist In Almerimar
October 23rd, 2008 - Chris MarshallI lived and worked in and around London for years, but saw nothing of it. Life was basically a mix of Taxi’s, Tube, Meeting Rooms, Restaurants etc. Whenever we had a visitor over to stay and we took them into London as tourists I was always surprised how much great stuff there was to see and do that tended to pass by in the blur of everyday life.
Now life here in Almerimar is significantly different from London but having had my friend Mac over from Canada for a week it was a good opportunity to take a week off and play the tourist for once ….
Wednesday 15th
Mac arrived at 5pm at Almeria airport. He was on time, I was just on time. My parking ticket in the airport was 0.05€, I walked up to arrivals just as he was coming through …….. perfect timing I say!!!
Sands had cooked a favourite of ours, chicken with chorizo so Mac got an early taste of Spain, and then he and I went down to the D-Bar to watch the England game, and introduce him to the world of tapas.
Thursday 16th

Thanks to John for the photo of John, Kath, Peter, Janet, Sands, Mac and I outside Al-rruz
After a walk around the marina to get his bearings, meet a few friends, and have a Guinness with Paul & Helana in Mac Gowans we met up with some friends in Al-rruz where Juan Carlos has specially cooked us a Cocido Madrileño. I don’t think it was what the others were expecting, but everyone enjoyed it and it was good to sit around and chat about life in Almerimar compared to Alberta, Canada!
Friday 17th

Castle at Guardia Viejas
Sands took Mac into El Ejido in the morning to take some photos and look at the shops, and then in the afternoon, after a lat breakfast at La Barbera Mac and I headed out to take some photos of the castle in Guardia Viejas. This is a very small, but fascinating castle that has been restored and presented very well. It is a good place to spend a hour or so, and if you are a photographer you will get some great shots.
Saturday 18th

Mac Enjoys A Well Deserved Beer
Saturday I was ‘working’ up in the mountains taking photos for The Long Way Round Andalucia which was a perfect opportunity to take Mac up in the mountains and let him lose with his own camera.
In the evening we went to Al-rruz for fillet steak (excellent as ever).
Sunday 19th
Plan was for a quiet day with the papers and a roast chicken. We had that, but Mac headed back into the Mountains with Chris Soroko to take yet more photos, arriving back in time for his Roast dinner and full of amazement at the sites and places that he had been.
Monday 20th
Sands took Mac up the cat home in the afternoon to take some pictures for her, and just to see the operation.
Tuesday 21st

Mac with the 2€ ticket and my iPhone where I have stored the location on the map!!!

Mac with yet another iPhone location stored
A real techie day!!! We did few things on the Macs in the morning, then headed into Almeria to take some photos of the Cathedral and the Castle. I am crap at remembering my way around, so actually put the iPhone to good use my saving the locations on the GPS/Map function …… also used it to save where I had parked the Jeep!!!
Called into Gran Plaza on the way back so Mac could pick up some gifts for the wife and kids, had a quick pint of Guinness in the marina and then grabbed a Chinese take away for an evening in front of the TV.
Wednesday 22nd
Another breakfast at La Barbera and a walk along the beach before a Wild Boar Paella at Al-rruz which was excellent. Somehow or other I ended up in a meeting while Mac and Sands went to pick up some toys for Macs children, and then Mac joined me for a couple of games of pool in Loch Ness and a couple of drinks in the D-Bar, a symmetrical book end to the trip.
Thursday 23rd
Dropped Mac off at the airport at 6.30am. It has been a great week, have enjoyed his company a lot, and have enjoyed having the best part of a week off to enjoy Almerimar and the surrounding places. It really is a pretty good place to come on holiday!!!!
As for me now, going to do some tidying up and playing with the cats today, then I have a huge amount of photos to edit, and a lot of posts to do for the blog, and a few meetings that I need to catch up on, so busy again from tomorrow onwards.
