Monarch Petition
Almeria Airport and the region that it services have had a good relationship with Monarch Airlines over the years.
Many visitors to the region from the the UK have enjoyed the services from Birmingham and Manchester.
The flights service the Expat Community, the Tourist Trade, and the Business Traveller.
While it is undeniable that ‘times are tough’ terminating all flights can only make it worse for the above travelers, and long term can not be a positive relationship building move for Monarch Airlines.
This petition is asking that Monarch Airlines through the Chief Executive Mr Peter Brown reconsider the decision, with a view to providing a reduced service rather than no service.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Hopefully you feel it is something you can support and maybe pass on to your friends and family.
If you would prefer to communicate directly with Monarch Airlines their details are:
Mr Peter Brown
Chief Executive

Prospect House
Prospect Way
London Luton Airport

Just to further prove I am not a robot, (although I sometimes feel like one) I am writing to wish you good luck with your petition.
It would be reassuring to know also that I am not corresponding with a Almerian robot at the other end.
Best wishes from Marbella

I wrote to Monarch and suggested they consolidate the flights to 2 a week but they are still saying no deal unfortunately.
Perhaps if people write in as well they will realise the depth of feeling.Ian Botham was on my daughters flight once. Pity you cannot contact him and suggest he adds his weight to this issue.
It doesn’t help reduce carbon emissions does it when they are expecting us all to drive long distances to make up for the shortfall of flights!

June 13th, 2009 at 14:17 QuoteAny written protest or comment petition assembled here in Spain which reaches a total of five thousand accredited names must by law be addressed by deputies in the national parliament in Madrid.
So why not redesign your petition page to make it easy for people to add their names to your list ?
At the moment we wander around your pages like lost souls trying to find somewhere sign up. Surely there are 5,000 people who regularly used Monarch’s winter flights between UK destinations and Almería ?
Mind you, the level of passenger service offered by this airline has steadily and unceasingly declined during the 7 years that we’ve been using it, so maybe they’ve made a deal with Jet2 Manchester / Leeds to take over their regular northern passengers.

I have moved the form up to the top of the page so hopefully it is easier for people to find.

June 14th, 2009 at 14:50 QuoteI understand that Monarch isn’t just stopping flying into Almeria over the winter but stopping using Almeria full stop.
Is it possible to confirm this? -

I will pass this information on to others. I don’t suppose it will make a lot of difference & I only hope they will return to Almeria in the Summer months!!!
Thanks for trying, John Tolan

August 9th, 2009 at 11:30 QuoteI think that Monarch airlines are not good enough for our travel. I would rather take a train/bus to another airport to use another airline, even ryanair.
Overall I hate air travel, because you are no longer human, and are treated as only a reference number. But with Monarch you dont get a proper seat. The couple of times I flew with Monarch, the seats were in very poor condition, the best I could get was to sit at a 25/30 degree angle.
So if Monarch stop flying into Almeria, I am sure that another, possibly better airline will take over.

August 10th, 2009 at 23:42 QuoteHas anything ACTUALLY been done about this petition yet??
Are there any other petitions running in Almerimar that you could amalgamate and strengthen the cause?
As for the comment about Ryanair-who would want to fly them with all the extra charges and possibly charging for use of the loo. Monarch are an old established firm that I like to think are still putting the passengers safety first and they are still Ok to deal with on the phone! Perhaps a cushion might help the 25/30 angle problem-must say I haven’t seen anyone walk off the plane at a 25/30 degree angle! -
Chris Marshall Says:
August 11th, 2009 at 10:33 QuoteI know Monarch are aware of the petitions, and I doubt very much they are goiung to be able to change anything even if they wanted to at this late date.
I think there are other paper based petitions in the Marina from the Observer, but I am not sure where exactly, or how that is going.
I am looking at adding another option to the site though to try and get more people to sign up still, as I think there is value still in letting Monarch know how local people feel.

August 11th, 2009 at 11:24 QuoteI would say that if they were aware of how many people use Monarch (may I also suggest that you get everyone to sign up individually rather than in couples then you get a much better idea of how many bums on seats there are that use this route) then surely they COULD alter their schedules. I can back this up as they changed the Tuesday flight times for this summer long after they had taken bookings from us all and it caused my family huge problems rearranging the hotels and flights from where we live. Fortunately as it was a schedule change and not a one off we managed to all the bookings changed FOC but had that not been the case it would have added another £1000 on to the cost of flying to Almeria. So please stop being so pessimistic ,get the other paper petitions joined up with this one, tell Monarch and point out that they CAN alter their scheduling as that already have done once this year!!!! they have already set a precedent…….(By the way did you manage to email Ian Botham for his comments!)
Keep fighting! -
Chris Marshall Says:
August 11th, 2009 at 19:57 QuoteLOl I can’t make people sign up individually
Would be nice but at the end of the day the guys at Monarch can reckon and Mr & Mrs is 2 people (or they really shouldn’t be running an airline LOL.No reply from ITB ….. my guess is that like most celebs he wont want to rock the boat (probably gets freebies), but I will keep trying.

August 11th, 2009 at 23:31 QuoteHad to laugh, just had a confirmation that another ‘couple’ have signed up. Made me realise that is wrong to assume that everyone has a separate email address. Many share, and of course the system wont allow multiple emails from the same address to prevent spamming.

August 12th, 2009 at 12:20 QuoteTo Fan Boy……….May I just point out that I was passed the petition by someone who also comes down to Almerimar and I immediately responded by putting a link on Facebook to which one or two of my friends and relatives signed and my family that is not over big these days due to death, also signed-not all have Pickering as the surname- so I feel that I have supported the petition to the full. I also wrote personally to Monarch.
Notice that we can all see your surname!
No not LOL I take exception to that comment.
What a shame the cause is not being fought for instead of petty comments like that. -
Jennifer Says:
August 12th, 2009 at 13:18 QuoteOh dear!!!! Come on guys …..
Has to be said though Christine that if you want to go round posting comments like “Has anything ACTUALLY been done about this petition yet?” and “Looks like we give up the fight without trying then huh LOL:=(” you are opening yourself up to comments back.
I actually read your comments to Chris and thought you were been critical towards what he is trying to do. I thought his response about not every family having multiple emails was more than fair, and I hazard a guess was something that you hadn’t thought about when you made your criticism?
I don’t think it is right to call Chris pessimistic at all over this either. The fact remains that the Airport have increased the fees and Monarch don’t want to pay them. No different to Ryanair at other airports for example. Have you seen how many of the local businesses in Almerimar have signed the petition? Exactly!!! You seem to have a lot of feeling and emotion about this which is great, but why don’t you direct it at the people that would benefit from the flights i.e. the businesses of Almerimar, rather than at this site which is trying to help??
-
christine pickering Says:
August 12th, 2009 at 13:37 QuoteOh dear I wasn’t going to post any more comments………
I was trying to put forward constructive points to Chris Marshall with regard to strengthening the petition by amalgamating the petitions that are floating around Almerimar.
I also put that point about ACTUALLY doing anything with the petition as time is passing by and what is the point in a petition sat on the computer instead of on Monarch’s desk. We have not been informed otherwise!
The comment about being sat at a 25/30 degree angle prompted me to comment again as I thought it was quite funny!
I have been led to believe that Almeria Airport was de-militarised at the end of January therefore doing away with the excessive costs of late landing fees,so was expecting more planes landing there instead of excessive charges being brought in ????????? Is this true or not?
With reference to the petition as it happens looking at it again this morning there are duplicate entries!!!-Pickering being oneNext comment please………………………
-
Chris Marshall Says:
August 12th, 2009 at 14:23 QuoteThe fees have gone up as far as I am aware.
By duplicate entries do you mean the same name twice as I had a quick look and couldn’t see any that weren’t linked to a unique email address. Of course people have the same name, but the system only allows one name per email address, so unless that part has broken there aren’t any duplicates.
I have just added the option for people to phone in and support the petition as well.
I don’t see how it is possible to amalgamate all the petions to be honest. A lot of the paper based ones have been signed by people that were here on holiday. As I see it so long as the names get to Monarch then that is all that matters.
The benefit of the one on this site is that it is visible to Monarch daily, so I wouldn’t worry that they they aren’t aware of it and seeing it. The last time I checked on Google if you typed in something like “monarch flights to almeria” this site came up 3rd
The paper based ones of course need to be sent to Monarch, but that is down to the people that organised them I am afraid. I set this up online as I felt it was the best way to get publicity for the petition and was an easy way to make Monarch aware of peoples views.
I thionk Jennifer made a great point above when she mentioned that hardly any of the local businesses hav ebothred to sign this petition!!!! To be honest if the bars, restaurants and shops of Almerimar don’t feel strongly enough to support it I think it will be hard to get Monarch to worried. Call me pessimistic if you like for having that view, but it is a fact
As for the rest of the ‘debate’ ….. am watchiong with as much interest as the next person LOL
-
christine pickering Says:
August 12th, 2009 at 21:19 QuoteLooks like we have got action now on the verbal signings of the petition all we need now is to amalgamate the petitions that are on paper in Almerimar through to Almeria through the region and Monarch might realise the strength of opposition to the cancelling of the flights to Almeria.
Like I said way back in June Chris Keep up the good work keep using your initiative and lets hope Monarch change their minds…….Even if only twice a day once a week to Almeria it is a popular route and well supported!!!!!!!
Roger, over and Out………………………. (We hope) -

September 10th, 2009 at 19:36 QuoteAllegedly there is a paper petition at Ankara and one at McGowans if you want to follow this up Chris…………………..
By the way I trust you have tried to get your 30,000 friends on Twitter to sign up to the petition!(I have just come back from Almerimar and the article on loving or hating the Brits was pointed out to me!)
Lastly when I asked if you had contacted the papers I didn’t realise that you WROTE for the Reader? What an opportunity to mention the petition and get even more signatures (did you?). ………………
(The Red Arrows were saved by the force of a petition so surely it can be done) -
Chris Marshall Says:
September 10th, 2009 at 20:00 QuoteAnkara and Mac Gowan’s have the petition set up by the Observer magazine.
The Reader promoted the petition at the time I set it up.

Jennifer Says:
September 10th, 2009 at 20:28 Quote@christine pickering you mean you were in Almerimar and didn’t meet up with Chris to see what could be done regards the petition? Seems a little strange to me ……
If you look at Chris’s Tweets you will see that he “tweets” out abut the petition pretty much daily. As he says the petitions in the Ankara and Mac Gowan’s are through the Observer and it really is up to them to follow them up isn’t it.
Didn’t know that about the Red Arrows, maybe they could set up a schedule of flights to Almeria? With the current number of tourists even they would have enough seats AND I bet their in flight is better than Ryanair’s LOL
-
Peter Says:
November 8th, 2009 at 20:21 QuoteImpressive list, but I don’t see many of the businesses in Almerimar on the list? Would have hoped they would have been first to sign up as surely they suffer because of the lack of flights!
