Meet Saidi

January 17th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Ok this one is definitely for cat lovers! Our new little stray is with us for keeps and we have called her Saidi. The first night was tough as our cat Mori was highly unimpressed to say the least, but nearly a week on and she is becoming part of the family. Mori really wants to play with her now, and they have got as far as sniffing nose to nose. A first good sign a few days ago was when little Saidi went to sleep in Mori’s bed under the chair, and he happily dozed in the sun ON the chair!

We now just need to get her playing with Mori and with us, but it may take a little longer. When she came to us she had just been spayed, had a blood test (hence missing fur under her chin!), and had up until then been feeding kittens, so she was sore and not feeling at all active. Now she is looking much healthier, but as we don’t know how long she had been out on the streets, and has had 2 litters that we know of in quick succession, play has not been high up there for her.

It will take time, but she loves being stroked, her coat is now gleaming and she seems settled and happy. As for Mori he is really quite fascinated by her, and they are SO alike that they could actually be brother and sister. Fingers crossed things get better and better.

Gotta go on record as saying that Sands has been brilliant with Saidi and the strays in general. She was far keener than I was on having a second cat and has worked really hard to make it work so far :-)

  2. Alberto Says:

    Hello to the Marshalls…

A small critic from some people is that Almerimarlife should be more about Almerimar and the people living here and the surrounding areas and not a place to talk about your cat/s…

  3. Chris Marshall Says:

What total rubbish that comment is!!!

    1. Almerimar Life is OUR site about OUR life here in Almerimar.

    2. Helping ’sort out’ the stray cats is something that we have done through this site for a while now and will continue to do so.

  4. Chris Marshall Says:

Hi Alberto. Looking to put more local content on there. I’m going to continue to put some personal stuff on the mini post ‘personal journal’, and the cats are a little topical at the moment following Chris’s sponsored run; it’s a way of telling people who gave money what is happening.
We’re aiming for the site to be part personal, part Almerimar, and part expat stuff re. living in Spain generally.
    Thanks for the feedback.
    Sands

  5. Jon Says:

Nothing wrong with some focus on the bloggers personal life, after all its meant to be informal!

Nice to see Saidi is settling in, hopefully she’ll become a celebrity of Almerimar with the blog coverage :P

  6. Thom Power Says:

Have to say that having sponsored the run it has been really good to keep track of what has been happening, and the fact that Chris and Sands have adopted one is great news and good to hear.

  7. Andy Rudkin Says:

I’ve been a long time reader of the blog and it’s GREAT to see that the sponsorship money has gone to such great use.

Let’s also not forget that the blog belongs to Chris and Sands and I for one have no issue at all with reading about the latest addition to their ‘family’… what could be a truer reflexion of real Almerimar Life.

Keep up the great work on a fantastic site guys.

  8. Andy Rudkin Says:

Also while I have my ranting shoes on…

Just wanted to say that the site has also been a great resource for me over the past few months. I have been planning my annual golfing expedition from the UK for the end of January and have found much of the information on the site very useful in terms of getting a feel for the area and looking at courses.

Chris has also very kindly kept me up to date on the weather situation in the region by email, so hats off for the personal touch.

  9. Chris Marshall Says:

@Andy - you are welcome, and when you are here I am sure that both Moreno and Saidi will be happy to meet you :-)

  10. Alex Says:

Comments about all aspects of Almerimar life must be welcome. The wild cats are an important part of pest control and I for one would rather have them properly looked after. Telling us about how the contributions have been spent is very helpful so keep up the good work. As a life long dog lover I’m glad I don’t live too near any of the unhappy animals that bark day and night because they are unhappy. Cats are quiet and clean and they do not foul the pavements and beaches. Those who help look after them are to be complimented and encouraged.

  11. Wayne LeFevre Says:

I think it’s great to bring a humanizing aspect to the blog. I’ve had enough of blogs that are so sterile and only comment on one aspect of one thing instead of everything that has to do with life!

What tells more about a community then how they take care of one another, especially those less fortunate. (Animals included.)

So keep up the good work. I especially like the videos, too. That, along with the blog posts are like a little slice of Almerimar, and that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

  12. Danny Says:

Although I agree that the site should contain news related to Almerimar it is after all a blog, and it is always refreshing to have a glimpse into the writers life so you (as a reader) can get a better idea of who is doing the writing.
Not to mention the fact that stray cats are clearly a very relevant issue in Almerimar.

  13. Mac Sokulski Says:

If this site was run by the town of Almerimar, then you might question this post. This site as far as I know is run privately. You might have noticed that there is a lot of information about Almerimar, and I think it’s a great service to the town. So if Chris and Sands want to help the town by adopting a stray cat, that’s wonderful. Not only they are putting the town on the map, with great advertising for the town, they also try to help with an obvious problem of stray cats.
    That’s my take on this.

  14. Chris Marshall Says:

Couldn’t leave this at 13 comments!!! And besides, Saidi wanted to say thanks to you all - well she would if she could talk, so for now you will have to settle for a meow!!!

Oh and Wayne (and the rest I guess) http://morenosworld.com for some unedited video footage of her first few days here.

  15. Francis Says:

Whilst not paticularly being fond of cats, I have no issue at all with any of the articles that are posted. I would like to commend the blog for providing me with ALL news from my second home (Almerimar). Thanks to this excellent site, I am able to keep up with all the news on a daily basis. Thank goodness for diversity.

As always, keep up the good work. You provide an important part of my daily routine. Without your site, I would be at a loss.

  16. John W Says:

    Hi,

I agree with the comments in support of the material about cats. I feel it is relevant to the blog because it is a big part of your life here.

On this issue of more material about Almerimar. You will see that the blog has a national and international focus as well as having material about Almerimar. This is by design. Local material is only part of what the blog is trying to cover.

Jacqui and I know that this is the case as we have just started working with Chris and Sands to help provide some of the local material for the blog. In parallel with continuing working on our own site about Almerimar which has much more of a local focus.

We feel that the two complement each other and by working together both can benefit from an increase in the amount and quality of local material. For example, both contain material about the upcoming Burn Night event here in Almerimar. However, only one of us has to gather the material. We can then share it and publish it each with our own slant. This is much more efficient that both of us gathering the material separately.

And having re-read my comment I can see some typos. Is there any way that users can edit their comments after they have been published?

  18. Chris Marshall Says:

Yep, you see the Edit and Quote links at the top of your comment. Click Edit. You have 30 minutes after submitting your comment to do so …… after that it self destructs :-)

  19. John W Says:

I only get the Quote option. Not Edit and Quote. I´ll try another comment and check it striaght away to see whether I get the edit and quote option for 30 minutes.

  20. John W Says:

Just checked this latest comment and it is not editable (so I can´t correct the spelling of straight).

Wonder if this is another example of something specific to my set up (like the non-display of Google ads) or whether this is something more general.

Perhaps one of the other readers can say whether they get the edit and quote option when they first add a comment?

  21. Chris Marshall Says:

Nope, not you! The plugin seems not to be working. Just checked on a couple of other blogs and it isn’t working on them as well.

The developers site says he has wiped his database in error as well.

I will try and get this fixed as soon as I can :-)
