Local Drowning
August 4th, 2008 - Chris MarshallA 19 year old tourist drowned yesterday while swimming with his brother off Almerimar beach. At the same time a 75 year old man drowned while swimming off the beach off Mojácar.
Strong undercurrents have been blamed on the Mojácar drowning, but no details provided on the Almerimar drowning. What I can say is that the weather can change very quickly here , as we noted yesterday when sitting and having some breakfast. On minute it was really calm and pleasant, the next a real wind have started blowing.
We cycled along the beaches yesterday and noted at least three life guards on duty on the West and East beaches, but people need to be sensible and observe basic safety recommendations.
Talking of beach guards, a volunteer guard at Roquetas has been congratulated on saving a 12 year old girl from a broken back yesterday. The girl apparently dived into 1/2 metre of water head first and the guard kept her afloat in the water for 15 minutes until a speciality ambulance arrived to take care of her. It seems that if they had just dragged her out of the water she would have been paralysed.
