Late Night Drink

February 10th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Around midnight last night, after another pleasant Chinese meal at the Wok Buffet Shanghai, we were looking for somewhere to have a last drink or two. Typical of Jan/Feb in Almerimar, even though it was Saturday night, all was pretty shut-up. We wandered into the Fossil Bar first but that was unappealing as the music was so loud conversation appeared impossible unless you wanted to shout. Then we noticed that La Caleta was still open, which turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Inside were a few tables of Spanish people, including the owners, having a chat over an after dinner drink. We had 2 drinks and were able to carry on our conversation with friends in a very relaxed Spanish atmosphere. I had never thought of Caleta as a last drink stop, but on a Saturday night, I can now strongly recommend it. In fact Chris and I both said this am, it is a bar/restaurant that we don’t use enough.

Often wondered why La Caleta never got a mention as it is one of the best bars in the area and the food is v good as well. The staff are excellent and there is always a lovely mix of Spanish and other nationalities to be found there. We were very upset to find that Oscar has gone and we now have another English bar in the Square so it is even more important that La Caleta is well supported.

  2. Sandra Marshall Says:

Great comment thankyou. I agree and we will be using La Caleta more. I am also sorry that El Farol is no more, but Oscar himself was very cheerful when we bumped into him last week!

  3. Chris Marshall Says:

Is weird that we never mentioned it now I think about it! I have used La Caleta on and off ever since we have ben here, I just never really think of it whenever we go out.

We did tend to concentrate on El Farol and Oscar wen we had Tapas, but I think we will be going to La Caleta a bit more these days :-)

  4. Jacqui M Says:

Agree that La Caleta is good.

The latest tapas bar to open is on Darsena 1 next door to Laurel & along from Marisquería Franc and Centrepoint. The owners are friends of Marianne and Sune, the organisers of the regular Tuesday golf, so are meant to be trying that place out tomorrow after the Tuesday comp.

  5. Chris Marshall Says:

Will be interested to see what you think. It looked pretty busy on Sunday morning when we walked past :-)

  6. DOROTHY Says:

Look forward to trying it out at Easter - we also use La Pasta(Darsena 1)quite often especially in the daytime as it has such a lovely view over the Marina. Manolo is quiet and unassuming but always friendly and helpful and the restaurant interior and bar area is one of the prettiest in the port.

  7. Sandra Marshall Says:

Thanks for the tip … not somewhere we usually go, although I have heard good things before. I will give it a try.

Just back after the Tuesday golf. The new bar is called the Barco bar. The covered outdoor area is not 100% finished yet. They have wiring in place for some better lighting to replace the bright strip light that is there as a temporary measure. Should be good when it is finished. Indoors looked OK as well.

I thought that the tapas was reasonable with a wide variety brought out to the golfers (but we do drink a bit). For example, sausages, pork in a tomato sauce, potato with onions and peppers, lomo, cheese etc. However, some was not as hot as we would have liked.

Jacqui preferred the tapas we get at La Plaza after the golf.

  9. Chris Marshall Says:

Sounds like you guys are going to be in demand!

La Plaza seem to want your business, Barco no doubt would like you back and I heard today that your old haunt on the beach is opening up again v soon and they are keen to retain your business.

This could make interesting viewing over the next couple of weeks!!! Maybe I should open a book on which bar will emerge victorious!

And for those that are in the know - still no sign of the Monkey!!!!!

  11. John W Says:

Just corrected my previous entry. It is called La Barca, not El Barco.

Other thing I noticed today was that La Solea, one of my favorite bar/restaurants is closed for major renovation. I have heard a rumour that it may be opening up as something else. The story I heard was that the people running La Solea may be moving to other (smaller?) premises close to the end of Darsena 2 not far from Nautico. Guess we will have to wait and see.

I have also heard that someone else is planning to reopen El Tuerto. For the moment we plan to take the Friday golf crowd to La Plaza. Not sure what Marianne & Sune plan for Tuesdays.

We are looking to rent accomadation for when we vist on May 1st 2008 and departing on May 6th 2008 how much would you charge us for this. We are visting to see how our apartment is coming along at porto fino near the marina and would like to rent close to this

  13. Chris Marshall Says:

I will ask around for you, and of course hopefully someone that rents out property will see this and comment back to you :-)

  14. Chris Marshall Says:

    Hi Julie,

My wife Jacqui and I rent out a 1 bedroom apartment here in Almerimar. If you want to see the details you can take a look at our advert here.

    http://www.homelidays.com/almerimar/apartment-flat141461en1.htm

Our apartment is in Almerimar rather than by the lakes but is around 15-20 minutes walk from the harbour and Porto Fino or a 2-3 minute drive. It has rather a nice view over the golf course straight towards Porto Fino, the pyramid and the sea.

If you would like to get in touch you can contact me via this site.

A couple of things to watch out for at the time you are coming. Virtually all of the pools on any of the urbanisations in Almerimar don´t open until around mid May so you probably won´t get access to a pool even if the advert says there is one. Also, I wouldn´t want to stay too close to Porto Fino because there is still a lot of noisy building work going on there at the moment that is likely to still be happening in May.

You might also like to know that as well as working with Chris & Sands on this site we look after another site called http://www.almerimar24.com. If you go to this site and look in the Photo Gallery in the menu on the left and select the most recent album you can see some pictures of progress on Porto Fino and other sites in Almerimar from last week. Porto Fino photos start on page 3 of the album. These is also a related news story that we published on 11 Feb. Just scroll down on the front page of the site and you can see the story.

    John
