Spain’s Sustainable Economy Law
December 17th, 2009 - Chris MarshallI have mentioned the Sustainable Economy Law before on the site and we are already seeing ways in which it will be used, for example the limiting of temperatures in public places and the changes in tax that will make property more expensive in Spain.
Known as the ley de economía sostenible the law is reported to cover everything from the future economic growth of Spain, to the immediate closure of websites that include pirated data.
So what do we know about the proposed Sustainable Economy Law?
Well first up it isn’t law yet. It is still been debated by relevant parties before a final version will be passed to the government.
Known as a paradigm law it will contain very specifics, but will act as a foundation and directional law for future laws taking the country in a new direction, to ” to re-orientate it from its past construction and tourism based economy towards a truly modern European services based economy.”
Seen very much as a wish list it has basically been constructed by taking all the various initiatives and projects that were work in progress and pulled them into one package, rather like with the PlanE development scheme BUT unlike that time a lot of the unions, local municipalities and federal authorities see this as a diminishing of their powers and as a result such is the row that many commentators doubt that President Zapatero will win this one.
A key criticism is that the concept of central economic planning is a step backwards from the autonomy of individual power that the rest of the world is embracing, with some die hards quoting the F word (Franco) and others the C word (communism)
To me it seems a little desperate and if I am honest on the basis that the current set of politicians have made such a mess of things I don’t think thst giving them more power is the right way to go!
