Almerimar Treasure Hunt

March 30th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Many thanks to everybody that contributed to an excellent Treasure Hunt yesterday. We have still to count all the collection tins as some are going to remain in the bars for a while, but with the team entry fees, bars contributions, donations and the raffle we have raised in excess of 1.000€.

Below are some observations, photos and video of the event, but be sure to tune into Ejido TV on Monday night at 9.30 pm!

Sands Doing A Piece To Camera – In Spanish!!

Congratulations to Team P.A.W.S. on their victory and to Team Nottingham Prisa for being the most energetic and well turned out team, they certainly helped to attract the attention of the TV more than anybody else!!

Nottingham Prisa In Action

The largest single impression that we got from the event is that everybody had fun. It was well organised, with a great balance of time spent searching, doing and drinking, and it was great to walk around and see people bribing the marshals for clues, phoning their friends and generally throwing themselves 100% into the event.

Bribes Did Work!

Kris Turns It On For The TV!

Personally we felt it was great to see so many people from different ‘groups’ participating and mixing, and the bars all said that they had people in that they had never seen before – so hopefully some will go back on a regular basis.

Again, got to say thanks to everybody that said they liked the site and the work that we are doing. It was all very much appreciated.

It was also good to see people that weren’t taking part in the event showing an interest, buying raffle tickets, making donations etc.

Maybe the best comment was saved to the very end of the night when we were having a last drink with Heather and Lee from La Plaza. Heather commented that this was the first time since they opened the bar that they had felt ‘part of a community’ event, and it was great!!!

The kids in particular had a great time and certainly added to the occasion with their enthusiasm and competitiveness.

So a great success financially and socially. Yes we hope to do one again next year and yes we will be doing a few more events throughout the year – as some of you know having already started the planning with us last night!

You can see some photos of the event in three places:

    Hi Chris,

I just want to say a very big THANK YOU to you and Sandra and John and Jacqui.

The Treasure Hunt was a resounding success and all the contestants
thoroughly enjoyed it – there had been a ‘leak’ as one young contestant had been practicing all week and could eat 10 crackers in 2 minutes!!! which has to be an all time record.Everyone entered into the spirit of the Hunt and the euros flowed into the tins and the Raffle – I personally took a lot of bribes which boosted the takings.I was also pleased that it was an ‘International’ event. I met a number of contestants whilst walking the dog at some unearthly hour this morning, most were feeling slightly hungover but
felt it was all in aid of a good cause. I am so pleased that so many people were willing to help us in our campaign to reduce the number of stray animals around the Port and surrounding areas.

I personally feed 3 colonies of cats and administer antibiotics and spray on antibiotic powder on the war wounded cats – all seem to respond to the treatment, my friends Jean and George Inkster also feed and look after a number of cats in Velas Blanca and this means that we can now seriously start on the spaying and castrating scheme to reduce the numbers.

The next thing is to find homes for the many kittens which we have at the moment and if Sandra can take some photos perhaps we can put them up around the Port and in the local Vets Surgery.

Once again a big WELL DONE.

    Pam Roberts

  2. Gary Says:

Congratulations on the very impressive amount you raised! I was tickled to read that not only were the marshals accepting bribes, but that said bribes were added to the sum raised. :-)

  3. Chris Marshall Says:

Cheers. I think the marshals had a competition running to see who could get the most in bribes, raffle tickets etc. Has to be said Shannon and Jenny’s tin was the fullest.

Just back from lunch in the marina – loads of people talking about the day, the three bars we called in at all said they had doen well out of it and would get involved anytime we wanted to do something.

About 20 people passed by and commented on the event – many who hadn’t actually been there at all.

Heard lots of funny stories but hopefully people will comment themselves.

Looks like a number of people are meeting at Cafe Milenio at 9.30pm tomorrow night to watch the Ejido TV bit.

  4. Mac Sokulski Says:

This is a brilliant idea. I especially liked the bribes. Looking at the happening from across the ocean, I can see the great community, which makes the wait until I visit in October, even more unbearable.

  5. Chris Marshall Says:

Hmmm – maybe we should set something up for when you are over!!! Take some of those Canadian $’s off you – would be good to see the money flowing out of your pockets rather than mine for a change :-)

  6. Mac Sokulski Says:

Ha, that “monopoly money” is not worth that much, but I would be happy to contribute. This really sound like a lot of fun, and great way to bring the community together.

  7. Wayne LeFevre Says:

Fantastic idea for a great cause. Looks like you guys pulled off a fun fund raiser. Would have liked to see more video! (Especially of the hosts!)

It’s nice to see Almerimar and feel a part of the community, even if I haven’t been there and live on the other side the world. Thanks for a great blog!

  8. Chris Marshall Says:

Well on the basis that I have 120€ of yours waiting here for you I can always drop the odd € in the fund for you :-)

  9. Mac Sokulski Says:

I completely forgot about that “safety” fund. Good to have some stashed away for emergencies. Can’t wait :)

I would love to have seen more as well – that is what comes of leaving the video camera with sands when a) she is drinking and b) there are 100+ people for her to chat to. That is all she managed to take in the 7+ hours that we were out!!!

AT least Ejido TV have promised me a DVD of the footage they shot, so hopefully will be able to do something with that!!!!

May not be as safe as you think now that I have remembered about it as well :-)

Will try and leave some for you …….

  12. Chris Marshall Says:

What was really funny was that on our way out to lunch we called by to feed the cats – and none of them were to be seen. I reckon they have all heard we now have the money to get them ‘done’ and they are in hiding :-)

  13. Wayne LeFevre Says:

:-) What, you didn’t like seeing her thumb? (Just having fun Sands!)

  14. Mac Sokulski Says:

Well if you going to organize something like this again, during the time I visit, can I apply for the job of the official photographer? You can do the video, and I’ll do the pics. What do you think?

  15. Chris Marshall Says:

Well it was pretty cool to see it the first time, not so sure the second, third, fourth …..

  16. Chris Marshall Says:

Deal – that is a great idea!

  17. Sandra Marshall Says:

Very funny guys! Not sure why he gave me the camera anyway as he knows I chat a lot and forget to take stuff! I was chatting away to my friend Emma over ANOTHER glass of wine and completely missed the prize giving, but hey ho at least I have actually used the video camera now.

  18. Mac Sokulski Says:

In this case my fee is very minimal. Here is my pricing:
What ever I put in the pot, Chris matches.
This will include lots of pictures, and camera lenses in people faces. :)
This way we can have more pictures of the Marshalls.:)

  19. Chris Marshall Says:

I can live with that! Whatever you donate from the 120€ I am holding for you I will match!

  20. Jenny Says:

Just another voice to add congratulations and thanks to Chris and Sands for a fantastic fun event, so obviously enjoyed by everyone. Hope there will be many more as everyone has benefitted (not least the strays), community spirit was plentiful, and the bars too had a profitable evening. A real winner, well done guys!

  21. Mac Sokulski Says:

After a further consideration of the whole event, battery, camera usage, personal risk of sleeping in the streets, my fees have risen. The Canadian Paparazzi fees will be 100€ for the whole event.

  22. Chris Marshall Says:

    Gulp!!!

OK I will match that – so 200€ added to the total. Thanks for your generosity (as ever) and for spending my money again for me (I should be used to that by now!!!)

I really am off for a lay down now – and to tell Sands I have just spent her going out money again :-)

  23. Mary Adamson-Leigh Says:

Have just arrived in Arboleas having brought Nancy, my fellow marshall, home. We are still chuckling about some of the events of last night. Thoroughly enjoyed marshalling and thinking up clues to the answers in our quiz. There was a fair bit of charading which caused a lot of hilarity! Everyone fully entered into the spirit of the event by their very enthousiastic participation, their generosity and their liquid consumption! I got the impression that the participating bars enjoyed it as much as we did, La Barca (where we were) was certainly great in laying on the tapas. Look forward to the next one! Thanks again to the 4 of you for organising it all so well

Thanks Jenny and well done to you and Shannon as well for having the heaviest collection jar. You must have taken a lot of bribes!

  26. Jon Says:

Looks like fun was had by all, congratulations on the apparent success.

Events like this should be done wherever people are in the world, community spirit is important IMO (plus all those nice kitties get some needed help!)

A treasure hunt!! That sounds like a blast

  28. Dunks Says:

Looks like a fantastic ‘community’ event and in a good cause. Perhaps easier on the legs than Chris’s last fund raising effort, although I hear whispers of another run???

Very impressed to see Sands doing the TV star bit and in Spanish!

Well done to all involved :-)

This is a great idea, and I can tell everyone had fun.

I’d like to volunteer to come when Mac does and be the paparazzi’s paparazzi – I’ll take pictures of Mac taking pictures!

But, alas, I have to use my highly devalued U.S. dollars, so I may not be able to contribute as much as Mac, who uses those strong Canadian dollars :)

Am still thinking about the Marathon!!! Being ill I have done nothing all month, but on the basis that I feel really out of shape, and yesterday was really motivational I reckon I will give it a go.

April will be the key month in making my mind up!

I had forgotten about you :-) You are training to be a Vet right, so how about we get you a load of cats and dogs to practice on when you are here in July!!!!

Maybe get you lined up as an assistant to the local vet to keep the costs down ……

  37. Andy Rudkin Says:

Well done guys! Anything that sounds that much fun and raises so much cash such a good cause was always destined to become an instant success.

Looking forward to hearing what the final total is.

Congratulations to everyone that took part.

  38. Thom Power Says:

Wow, I wish there was events like this around my area. ‘Groups’ of people here in the UK seem to stay very separate which is a shame.
But don’t forget about me Chris! I may be visiting you to see Almerimar for myself :D

  44. Heather Branson Says:

Have to say that as one of the bars that participated we thought it was well organised, great fun, and the first real sense of community that we have seen in Almerimar since we opened the bar.

Thanks for organising it and introducing so many new customers to the bar – many of whom have been back already.

In fact this morning we had four people in for a full breakfast who had come down to collect their free breakfast for two from the Milenio that they won in the raffle. The Milenio was closed so they thought they would give us a try ……

  45. Gary Says:

With all this talk of treasure hunts, I’ve remembered a rather fiendish clue for a treasure hunt I co-organised about (good grief!) 20 years ago. This was a Sunday afternoon family event – none of your visit-five-bars stuff then. :) (Mind you, it was also a car treasure hunt, so alcohol would have been inappropriate.) This particular one went from the south side of Glasgow, down the coast to just outside the town of Ayr. Given the various clues we had them solve, this was probably a journey of somewhere between 40 to 50 miles.

The clue which gave us an enormous amount of satisfaction – and probably caused the most arguments within the various teams :D – was where we had them visit a (former) mansion house in what was by then a public park and asked them to count all the chimney pots! This required people to park their cars, get out and walk around the house and – hopefully – have each member of the team come to the same total… This view (not mine) of part of the house house will give you some idea of the deviousness of the challenge…

  46. Chris Marshall Says:

That seems a little cruel!!! Fun, but cruel :-)

  47. Chris Marshall Says:

In fact this morning we had four people in for a full breakfast who had come down to collect their free breakfast for two from the Milenio that they won in the raffle. The Milenio was closed so they thought they would give us a try ……

That seems like just about the perfect scenario – another cafe puts up the prize and you get the business! Wish I could take credit for that one :-)

yes chris I am very competitive. Why didnt I win the cup as I gave you a huge bribe.

Why has Pickles (FA Cup dog fame) been seen out and about?????

  55. Tracey Says:

Apologise for late congrats on such a well organised and successful event.
We all had a great time including the kids who took it upon themselves to solve the ‘entrance’ clues to the bars and then helped us answer some of those more tricky questions!
Well done to all for the money raised.
What now is the Ajuntamiento willing to do to contribute in tackling the problem of the strays? Surely the sum of money raised would demonstrate to the ‘powers that be’ the strength of feeling amongst some of the local population. Perhaps a joint project could be undertaken?
Looking forward to the next event!

  56. Chris Marshall Says:

Thanks, and you are welcome – I think it was great that we had the kids involved as well.

That is a good idea/point regards the Ajuntamiento – I think Sands has it on her list of things to try and get done!!!

The drink out of the winning cup was the best one of the night!

  59. Chris Marshall Says:

Not so sure about that, but then again I did drink the whole cup in one, apart from some ice cubes!!

  60. John Witham Says:

Well as it had several spirits and wine I am not surprised – amazed, but not surprised!!!
