Almerimar Golf Course In Poor Condition

September 29th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Temporary Greens & Green Repairs

We went to lunch last week at Nautico (again), and while we had an excellent time our view of Nautico hasn’t changed ……. great setting, nice people, but over priced and over rated food.

That isn’t the reason for this post though, other than I met Brian one of the regular golfers here and apart from having a good drink with him (although the red wine at Stumble Inn was like vinegar according to Brian and Sands), and a couple of games of pool, we had a good chat about golf here in Almerimar.

We disagreed on a number of points which was good, and inevitable as he is a golfer and I am ex golfer, but we did tend to agree on the way that the course is run here in Almerimar. In all probability I would still be a golfer if it wasn’t for the

  • Voucher System – which I find expensive, poor value and totally inflexible
  • Course Maintenance – they don’t seem to have a clue about maintaining a golf course
  • Course Management – getting a tee time, speed of play are all very poor
  • Course Condition – too many poor golfers (and golfers lacking in etiquette) means the course is full of divots, pitch marks, poorly raked bunkers etc
  • Membership System – or more accurately lack of. As a resident a ‘twilight’ membership would be very attractive

So why am I writing this now? Well with the Tarleton Travel Golf Competition due to start this week (we covered it in some detail last year) you would have thought that they would have done everything they could to improve on what was perceived as a good week last year, but no! The course is in such poor state that they have moved some of the golf to Playa Serena! So at a time when the economy is tough and businesses need all the help they can get the answer from the golf course is to prepare (or not) a course that turns people away, and no doubt stops people playing when they are on holiday, and in all probability is stopping people coming over to play.

The problem stems from the use of a wrong mix of top-dressing which has effected all but one of the greens as I understand it, and the majority of surrounds of the greens have been effected as well.

At the moment there are temporary greens and a lot of ground under repair areas, and according to friends that I have spoken to they are skeptical that it will be in a good shape at all this year, and many are talking of not bothering with the vouchers next year.

Now while I don’t want any business here to suffer, I would have no sympathy at all if the golf course struggled as nothing they have done over the last three years has been targeted at remotely helping the businesses in Almerimar.
