Almeria Unemployment Drops

November 8th, 2009 - Chris Marshall

This is a crucial time of the year in Almerimar, and other places like Adra, Almeria, El Ejido, Mojonara etc where the fruit and vegetable industry remains the main source of income, and jobs!!

This was reflected in the fact that Almeria had the biggest rise in employment last month (October) thanks to the increased demand for fruit and vegetables. Of couse these aren’t the best paid jobs in the world, but the increase in production means that many people have been re-hired.

The good news is tempered by the fact that the new shipping routes to Barcelona & Germany mean less transport jobs are needed, and the continued low prices mean that farmers may not be able to afford to harvest crops.

Try finding a cucumber at the moment!! Prices of cucumbers and aubergines are so low that a lot of the crops have been destroyed as it was uneconomical to harvest them!

Another issue is that it isn’t exactly highly paid labour, tends to be short term contracts, and wont really put much money back into the economy
