Just Lost 1.000€

July 11th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Yesterday I lost my Nokia N95, which meant that today I had to sort out a replacement SIM card and phone. The main priority phone wise for me is 3G capabilities and the ability to run QIK on it so that I can stream live video. The N95 was perfect and I had actually stopped using my iPhone. However with the new iPhone released today it was always going to be tempting, and many of my friends, colleagues and readers of my Personal Blog are convinced that I lost the N95 on purpose!

I can assure that is not the case and I will happily pay a reward to anyone finding it, or would be happy to buy a second hand one off anybody that wants to sell one.

Anyway having looked at the rates for the iPhone as stated on the Movistar site, and having seen that they were showing a store in El Ejido as one of the stores selling them, Sands and I decided to go up this morning and take a look, with a view to buying an iPhone. I wasn’t really expecting a queue as I can’t see them being that much in demand here, but my friends were reporting them selling out in the UK in minutes, and the store authorisation systems crashing left right and centre.

Anyway no one was in the store when we arrived because ……….. they weren’t selling the iPhone!!! Apparently it is only available in Madrid on launch day. The girl running the shop knew all about it, and that the shop was listed, but she didn’t know when they would be getting any and thought they would just get one or two. While we were there 3 other people came into enquire about one, so it wasn’t just us that didn’t know about the Madrid only ‘rule’. Being Spain though, no one made a fuss, just a collective shrug of the shoulders and off they went.

I took the opportunity to get my new SIM card (which is now sitting in my old iPhone) and gave the girl the details of the iPhone that I wanted. She will give me a ring when it arrives. I also checked out the cost of a New N95. It would cost me 170€ on a 60€ per month contract, which is way more than I need, plus I would have to pay for the data as well. A lot more that the iPhone ……… or so I thought!!!

Just as we were leaving I thought I would check that I would be able to keep my existing number. Sure I can, no problem, just the small matter of the iPhone costing twice as much as if I set up a new contract and requiring 23.000 of my Movistar points!!!!! It seems that if you transfer from a other provider e.g. Orange, Vodafone etc you get the best deal. Next best is for new customers. Worst deal by a long way is for existing customers which is so wrong in my view!!!!

Anyway we use the phone so little anyway that leaving my number on the existing plan as a ’spare’ phone isn’t really an issue as Sands can have the minutes that I don’t use and I will go with a new contract …….. whenever the phone turns up.

Anyway as we were out I decided to pick up a cable that I need to connect a screen to my Mac. I need to connect screen (HDMI) to Mac (DVI) so called into Copos center and went to the specialist TV store that we have used before. A 3m HDMI to HDMI cable was 39€ and I would have to buy a converter. I was expecting this so was all set to buy the cable when Sands said I should try the every popular Batch PC. I just couldn’t see how they would have such a specialised cable hence the:

I bet you 1.000€ they don’t have one

that I came out with ……

And of course they had one. In fact they had a cable that was HDMI at one end and DVI at the other, so no need for a converter and it was only 18€. Boy was I glad to be wrong ……..

I am sure that the quality of the cable wont be as good as the specialised ones, but I am sure that it will be more than adequate for what I need.

So there you are 1.000€ worse off and still no iPhone!!!!!
