In The News: w/e 9th January 2009

Items that caught the eye for one reason or another recently include:

Of Local Interest

It looks like La Bahía in the square is one of the first casualties of the 2009 recession as it has a For Rent sign up at the moment.

Talking to a number of golfers recently the general consensus is that he course is in very poor condition at the moment, especially the greens and fairways, which only leave the teas, and some of those are crap it seems as well. As such it is somewhat ironic that the clubhouse is developing well, but on the basis (according to a source who said they would rather not be named), the only reason they are building it is to avoid a demolition tax on the old Golf Hotel, so don’t hod your breath on it ever being finished!!! Wouldn’t they be better spending the money on the quality of the course ….. oh, and how technically do you have a club house when you don’t have a club, as their are no members of Almerimar Golf Course!

Still on the subject of golf, they have done away with the voucher system and replaced it with some swipe card system, and they are offering incentives for people to block purchase which allow under 18’s to use parents tickets if they pay one green fee plus 5€ ….. everyone wanting to purchase block vouchers (sorry swipe cards) has to be a member of the Spanish Golf Federation

Must admit that the rumour (that I tweeted on the 7th) about the old All Days becoming a Indian Takeaway Restaurant owned by the India Gate in Roquetas sounds good and would please a lot of people I know!!!

Around Spain

I have written before about the demise of Bullfighting, so in a way it wasn’t a surprise to read about the Paterna (city close to Valencia) referundum voting a pretty loud (68%) No. Well loud may be a over statement as only 15% of the voters turned out!

With growing numbers of unemployed in Spain it was frankly horrifying to read that you cannot draw unemployment for more that 24 months, maximum; and the minimum monthly payment is 482,22€ (645,26€ is you have children), the maximum €1055,33 (1206,10€ with one child, 1356,86€ with two children).

Elsewhere in Europe

European airlines are facing losses of up to $1 billion (£690 million) in 2009, according to a report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

It doesn’t look good for the rental market this year as booking enquiries for all-inclusive holidays were 17 per cent higher in the five days to January 1 compared to the same period last year! Plus rising costs in the Eurozone are leading to a surge in interest in good value selfcatering holidays in the UK

I used to work at the Wedgwood factory in Barleston when I was at school in the holidays, you can see it through the trees from the bottom of my parents garden. Not a good time at all for Stoke!!!

About Almerimar

Almerimar is located in the region of Andalucia, Spain. The nearest airport is 30km away in Almeria. Other airports that are within 3 hours include Malaga, Murcia, Granada, and Alicanti. Other holiday resorts in the region include Mojacar , Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar

Almerimar is a great place to live as an expat amongst the expats, or to work amongst the Spanish. There are all kinds of properties including villas, apartments and town houses for rent or sale. Is there anything like social assistance, once your unemployment benefits run out? I’m curious if this would be a Spanish responsibility, or EU… forgive the ignorance.

  2. Chris Marshall Says:

Unemployment benefit is it, that is all you get when you lose your job. That is the issue here, when you have had your allowance that is it. Having said that it has some logic as their are people in the UK that are unemployed all their lives as they prefer not to work!

There is a system of other ’state’ benefits for people on low incomes, disabilities, child allowance etc etc that are the responsibility of the individual countries.
