Distinct Lack Of Christmas Spirit
I wrote earlier in the week about Norwich City Council in the UK putting a dampener on the Christmas Spirit, well it seems that the tables have been turned in Almería.
Like many of the Ayuntamientos, including our very own Almerimar one, Almería follow the tradition of planting red pascuero. In fact when I came back from El Ejido recently I took a picture of them being planted on a roundabout on the way into the marina. Well it seems that as fast as they are planting them in Almería they are getting stolen. When I read this it reminded me of a couple of years back one evening when Sands and I were driving back up from the Marina and a car had stopped on a roundabout and the occupants were digging up a couple of the plants. Young mindless vandalism I know you are thinking ….. not at all, the man and woman were 70 years old if they were a day!!!! We just sort of shrugged it off as ‘one of those things’ but the situation in Almería sounds more serious, no doubt they will all end up being sold at the side of the roads!
NATO coming to Almería
NATO may not be ready for Georgia yet, but Almería is ready for NATO as the 37 countries of the NATO alliance, plus 7 North African and Middle Eastern countries have agreed upon Almería as the host city for the “Mediterranean Dialogue” conference on security and cooperation in the Mediterranean.
Should be ‘fun’ trying to get in and out of Almería when it is on (no idea on the dates sorry) as it is being billed as a “maximum security” conference.

Fighting Spirit
Still in Almería I laughed my socks off when I read that a man had been fined 3.000€ and banned from sporting events for 6 months after “starting a riot” at the Meditteranean Games Football Stadium.
What made it so funny? The man in question was in a wheelchair and apparently took offense when asked to move away from a emergency exit that he was blocking to the allocated disabled area (which was something like 20 yards away).
A Medieval Festival We CAN Support!
As we aren’t supporting the Almerimar Christmas Market on principle (is funny …. the post didn’t get many comments but I have been stopped and thanked by so many of the businesses here since writing it) it is good to know that there is a Medieval Festival on the 19th, 20th and 21st December in Huercal Overa. May try and pop along and check it out and compare it to the Almerimar Medieval Market that we had in July & August.
