Of Local Interest

The minimum wage, known as the Salario Minimo Interprofesional, in Spain is going to rise to 624€ a month for 2009, a increase of 4%.

Electricity prices will rise by an average of 3.4% from 1st January, although exact increase depends on which domestic tariff you are on.

The annual Burns Night celebration will take place on the 24th January at the usual restaurant (El Espignon). Commencing at 7.30pm the Address to the haggis will be made by Alex Petit, The Immortal Memory by Barry Castle, the Toast to the Lassies by John Witham and the Lassies’ response by Dawn Payne. Tickets cost 15€ and can be reserved at the Alamar Chandlery for 10€.

Those of you that use Vodafone 3G USB Modem will no doubt have noticed that the service is back up and running following the repair of the antenna in Almerimar.

The road through the ‘old camp site’ is now open, so getting to Guardia Viejas is once again easier.

The Golf In Almerimar site has been updated with some dates for 2009

Around Spain

About 500,000 people whose families had to flee Spain during the civil war and the subsequent Franco era now have the right to apply for Spanish citizenship. Spain’s new Law of Historical Memory, enacted a year ago, applies to people whose mother or father was Spanish, and the grandchildren of those who fled

Elsewhere in Europe

In the UK parents will be warned not to ‘kill their chilren with kindness’ in a new Government campaign to combat the childhood obesity crisis. Parents who ‘give in’ to their children and allow them to eat unhealthy food and sit around playing computer games, are putting their future health at risk, the campaign will claim. A series of adverts will feature children saying they will die early of heart disease or diabetes because of their parents’ actions. One in four children are overweight when they start school and one in three are too fat by the time they leave primary school, official figures have shown.
