In The News ……. w/e 12th December 2008

December 12th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Some items that caught the eye this week for one reason or another:

1500 new leisure berths to be created, but NOT in Almerimar

Looks like Adra (400), Roquetas (100), Carboneras Marina (650) and Garrucha (350) are set to get new pleasure boat berths in 2009 which will increase the number of berths in the province to 4792 (currently 3292)

Cantoria Mayor blames dog s**t on Brits

Was interested to read that the Mayor & Corporation of Cantoria has passed a bylaw permitting the fining of dog owners who leave their pets s**t in the street. It has to be said that there are certain areas in Almerimar where this is a problem, but a problem made primraily by the Spaniards who either let their dogs roam (and s**t) free, or just stand by while the dog does it business. As a rule the brits tend to very good carrying their little plastic bags of s**t around with them until they get home.

It seems that the Mayor (Pedro Llamas) & Corporation of Cantoria blame the Brits though

while he welcomes the new expat members of the community, the Brits tend to be animal lovers who bring large number of pets with them who then foul the area, and are later abandoned “which causes theDiputacion great problems in catching the strays”

Seems totally the opposite here in Almerimar as readers of Almerimar Life Strays will know, it tends to be the Spanish that abandon their animals and the Brits who adopt them.

Trouble in Mojonera

It wasn’t good to see that there were riots in Mojonera home of the Casa de los Gatos following the murder of an immigrant in a racially motivated attack (allegedly)

Franco Still Honorary Mayor of Almería

Yet more Franco news this time news that he remains the honorary mayor of Almería city, an honour that was “bestowed” upon him in 1943 only a few years after his Nazi “friends” had spent three days destroying the city and killing many people! The honour was never removed when he died as should be the case so in theory it remains in place, along with a further 8 honours.

Drink Driver Purge Over Christmas

Locally we can expect to see more breath tests conducted on drivers over Christmas as part of a planned 15,000 tests a dat by the Guardia, with spot check focussed on midday and the evening. Looks like the local hotspots are going to be Almería city, Roquetas del Mar, Mojácar, Vícar, Velez-Rubio & Níjar

On the same subject but this time in the UK Police in Edinburgh are to pester locals with Bluetooth messages asking them how they plan to get home, in the hope of making them think before getting behind the wheel drunk.

The news comes courtesy of The Scotsman, which reports that Bluetooth nodes will be placed near drinking hotspots and transmit text and images to nearby phones. This would include the campaign message: “Who’s taking you home tonight? Bus, taxi, police, paramedic?”

Thanks as ever to Dave for helping me with some of the above news items.

Another reason to drink in the D-Bar ….. you can walk home!!!! I really like these update posts, thanks for adding them to the site. Another ‘first’ for you I guess ;-)

  2. Mac Sokulski Says:

It’s interesting to read that Franco is still an honorary mayor of Almeria. I remember when Poland got “away” from the communist rulers. The first thing they changed was all the street and plaza names from all the communist “heroes”. Made is a little bit confusing, because a lot of people still used the old street names, but the street signs were already with new names.

  3. Chris Marshall Says:

The Franco ‘thing’ is going to run and run. Has been interesting the reaction of the younger friends that I have here, some are very pro, and some extremely anti!!!

  4. Mac Sokulski Says:

Now that is interesting….. someone would be pro a fascist dictator? I better get into more research, before I put my foot in my mouth.

  5. Chris Marshall Says:

That is what I am doing ….. trying to learn a lot more about it all. Emotions and loyalties run very strong still here in Spain.
