Hibernating

February 25th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Isn’t it weird how, when you are so used to sunshine, a lack of it makes it hard to get out of bed? Today has started off wet and dull, and I have to own up to spending half the morning drinking tea, and watching highlights of the Oscars on Sky News! Of course it is good to have the luxury of a more flexible lifestyle in that I CAN do this, but looking at my little cats it seems that this desire hibernate when it is cold and wet is completely natural. It is exactly what animals do, and we are of course animals too. Maybe we humans fight it too much. Certainly the Spanish tradition of a big lunch followed by a siesta seems very natural too and what every self respecting wild animal would do. I was actually listening to a podcast a few weeks ago about a book a well known sports commentator had written. His theory is that humans are much happier and better adjusted if they have some element of ‘the wild’ in their lives, or a connection with wild animals. I currently have the stray cats, and the occasional bird visiting our roof. What do you have? Do you like walking, bird watching, horse-riding or even growing things?
