Have Your Say – Francis

October 19th, 2007 - Sandra Marshall

What brought me to Almerimar?

A gent told me to look at Almerimar and give it a visit. This was arranged and a week was spent both around the port and inside the bars. It was May 2004. We travelled to La Envia and saw a little of Roquetas. But we also took a trip to Balanegra and saw the route up to Guardias. All pleasant stuff (with the possible exception of Roquetas).

The port restaurants in Almerimar were enjoyable. Sadly, one of them (Cubanitos) has now closed. It always seemed busy when we went, served great food and was a good evening.

A visit back that year followed, with the kids in trail; we had a month (August) to spend and get the feel of the place. We had bought a place on our first visit and so took the decision to sail to Bilbao, and drive through the middle of Spain. It gave me an insight into the landscape. Found Almerimar and spent a good month. I still did not quite understand the place, but knew that it felt like ‘mi pueblo’.

A couple more visits over the next year still did not settle my thoughts about its future. But Christmas was spent well in Almerimar with a sensible outlook on how christmas should be spent. The fact that the marina is so special belies the fact that too few people are there, because there are too few places of interest around particular darsenas. I still love the place and am happy to take Almerimar as I find it. It has enough for me by a long way.

What are the main things I like about Almerimar?

It looks good; the beaches are good; there are places to discover all around the region; there is a pleasant mix of nationalities, and the days can be spent at your own pace. It is a safe place with good facilities. The golf is readily available and there seems to be a good network within the community.

I look forward to an increase in future visits, with a view to……. when the time is right.

What brought me to this area? We first came on a few holidays with friends to Benidorm about 10 years ago On about the third trip decided to venture further afield and literally stumbled on Mojacar. We all fell in love with the area, from the beautiful Playa with all the little beach bars to the Pueblo with the spectacular views from the plaza. On our next holiday we booked into Mojacar and our friends bought a holiday home-which they still have and use for 6 months a year. My hubby wanted to move out there and then but I was a little more cautious and wanted to wait a few years. However less than a year later we moved into our house in a small Spanish village just 5 minutes from the coast. What a culture shock, but we embraced it and although it wasn’t always easy we spent a very happy 3 years there. We moved inland 5 years ago to Albox, which is a working market town and live in the campo. Albox is still very old Spanish and for the most part is like stepping back in time.

Main things in my life? Work, work and work-we run 3 businesses. But we also make lots of time for the a beer and tapa.

How my life has changed?. It has been a total change moving here. We lived a very materialistic lifestyle in the UK. Here I don’t have a lot of mod cons but I have a pool and lots of space for my cats and dogs, which we sadly couldn’t have in the UK due to our work.

Main things I like? Pace of life, now enjoy the “Manana” culture which I hated initially and couldn’t wait to get back on the first plane to civilization.

What do I miss most? Tescos, yes even after 8 years.

Do I feel part of Spanish life? In my work I deal with British so I guess I don’t intergrate as much as I could-which is my fault. I think you miss out if you don’t and I keep promising myself to try harder as I love the country and the people.
