Happy Birthday Euro

May 10th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Seems like in all the excitement of last week we missed a big anniversary - 10 years since the agreement on the Euro was reached!

When the euro was launched there were plenty of people who thought it would crash and burn.

Ten years on, its role as a global currency is secure, even if it hasn’t achieved everything its founders hoped.

I remember when the Euro was first announced. I liked the idea of the convenience of a single currency when traveling as at the time I tended to have about 4 european currencies in my wallet at any one time, but wasn’t sure I would want to use it at home. I liked the novelty and excitement of different currencies, but felt that overall it was a good thing.

Well since its actual introduction in January 2002 it is now my ‘home’ currency, and I am more than happy with it, especially on the occasions that I travel through Europe. I find the old £ a little dull by comparison, and can’t get to grips with the AED (Dirhams) in Dubai!

As far as its economic performance goes I found this interesting from the article:

Spain and Ireland did well out of the early years of the euro - too well, some would say.

Being part of the single currency meant that interest rates were lower, for longer than they would otherwise have been, during the boom years when their economies grew rapidly.

That allowed some US and UK-style imbalances to build up, particularly in the housing market.

Both economies are now set to slow sharply as a result of the credit crunch. It is possible that they will even suffer a recession.

By contrast, Germany and France had less of a boom, and may now only suffer a modest slowdown.

Celebrating 10 years of the Euro?
