Google Ads

March 27th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

We run the Google Ads for two reasons. First by putting up good relevant content we hope to bring you great offers that you can benefit from, and second we hope that by doing that you earn us money as every Ad you take a look at we get a payment for.

So it is important that everyone can see the Ads, which doesn’t appear to be the case! I have just spent the morning getting totally confused!!!

Here in our apartment using either a Mac or a Windows PC we see the adverts whether we are using Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Camino or Opera as a browser.

At a friends Villa I can see the ads on their Windows Vista Notebook.

In the Mediterra offices I can see the Ads on my Mac running OS X and Windows XP using their router BUT they don’t see them on their Windows PC using Firefox or Internet Explorer. They do however see them on the Notebook that they have. In the office next door they don’t see the Ads on Notebooks or Desktops running Windows XP or Vista.

I know that John doesn’t see the Ads on his Windows PC’s using either Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Two of our neighbours see the Ads on their Windows Desktops and Notebooks, Internet Explorer and Firefox, Vista and XP.

Confusing to say the least ………..

Am trying to figure out what it could be. I don’t see how it can be anything to do with the ISP (Telefonica) as it works on some and not on others and there is no way Google would accept a mass ‘blocking’ of their Ads.

It is hard to see how it can be an Operating System issue as it works on both OS X and Windows (Vista and XP).

It can’t be a router issue as the same router has worked for me and Roberto, while not working on Emma’s computer.

At the moment I am thinking that it must be the Anti Virus software. The Mac we can exclude from this as it doesn’t use any third party AV software. The Windows machines that I have all run the free Avast software, as do the two neighbours and the friend in the marina that I looked at yesterday.

I don’t think Roberto’s Notebook uses any AV software, but I need to check that out. What I would really like to know from you guys though is:

a) Do you see the Google Ads displayed
b) What OS are you using
c) What Anti Virus software if any do you use.

If you don’t feel comfortable leaving a comment please email me

Thanks, this will be a great help!

Seems to be working over here on OS X 10.5.2 and Safari 3.1 and FireFox 3 Beta 4. no anti virus and I’m using BT Broadband. could be an ad blocker ?
there are some that will block in page adverts now, may be something to look in to?

  2. Wayne LeFevre Says:

Works here with 10.5 Safari 3.1 and Flock 1.1. No AV.

  3. Danny Says:

I see them on 10.5.2 on Safari and Camino. Im guessing its got to be ad blockers.

  4. Chris Marshall Says:

Ah all you Mac guys - no AV bliss eh!!!!

If it is an Ad Blocker, which I can see how it would be, then I think it must be a setting that is set to block by default as of all the ones I have seen so far that have the issue none of the issues say they have done anything other than just install the software (or have it installed) so it hasn’t been a conscious decision to block the ads.

That is why I want to see if there is any common AV link. It isn’t a setting in Internet Options, or Windows Security as far as I can figure out so far.

    Hi,

Its got nothing to do with the virus settings IMHO.

Its all down to the firewall settings.

Anyone using zone alarm pro. If you go to “privacy” then select the “main” tab, then “custom” within the mobile code control area. Deselect the “block javascript button” and all should be well.

Obviously you can test this by selecting “block javascript”.

    Works for me ;-)

Well that would explain why I could access it and the PC couldn’t at Roberto’s.

Well worth investigating - will try and see if the people with the issue use it :-)

    Cheers

OK. One thought is that it could be to do with the general security settings on the browsers rather than specific anti-malware tools or popup blockers etc.

Both our computers are windows PCs running XP Home Edition running Firefox as the main browser but also running IE 6 on one and IE7 on the other. None display google ads.

As Chris knows I’m a bit anal retentive so I lock down our PCs very tightly and run active and on-demand (scheduled manually) anti-spyware and anti-virus software.

Will list the active things that I can remember….

I manage the host file using a host file management tool. I use Spybot TeaTimer to protect registry settings, use AVG Free anti-virus software and Zone Alarm Free firewall. I did lock down some Firefox and IE browser settings ages ago based on recommendations at an online Malware Removal University but can’t remember which settings as it was a long time ago.

I looked at pop-up blocker settings on IE and Firefox when I mentioned this issue to Chris a couple of months ago. After brief investigation I didn’t think that was the cause of the blocking then.

If I get some spare time I’ll have a tinker around and see whether I can see what is the cause on my PC and report back.

My personal feeling is that there are likely to be multiple causes of the blocking of the google ads and there is not a simple answer to this issue.

I did Google the issue and didn’t get anywhere after a couple of hours. Given that we don’t have Google ads on almerimar24 at present I didn’t rush to spend many more hours investigating this.

  8. Chris Marshall Says:

I went through the browser settings on my Mac that was working (Fierfox and IE) and PC that wasn’t. Settings exactly the same - my machine worked, the other one didn’t.

I may be being unkind here but in my experience very few people actually bother with their Internet Options settings, so the majority are still at default. If you haven’t actively gone in and set yours to block then I can’t see that the other people (to date) with the issue have.

Worth double (or is it treble) checking of course ……

  9. Mac Sokulski Says:

I tend to agree with the above comments about the antivirus. Sorry to say but windows is plagued by all kinds of anti-this anti-that software. Some actually get installed as part of another package. I would definitely check on the antivirus program, and try to disable it, just to see if it’s causing the problem. Also check if there are any toolbars attached to IE that will do add blocking.

  10. Chris Marshall Says:

@John - forgot to say, it isn’t necessarily on Google Ads that are not showing. There is a chance that banner ads aren’t showing either. I know that this has been the case in the past, but I didn’t check today.
