Golf In Almerimar - Friday Friendly Golf Competitions

March 8th, 2008 - Chris Marshall

Here John explains the Friday Friendly Golf Competitions in Almerimar, and provides a recording of the recent prize giving:

During the autumn, winter and spring there are friendly golf competitions here in Almerimar every Tuesday and Friday. Our friends, Sune and Marianne organise Tuesdays and Jacqui and I organise Fridays. Things are a little less planned in the summer as there tend to be less locals around, but we are aiming for at least one competition each week.

For all the competitions entry lists go up on the notice board outside the pro shop in the AR Almerimar hotel for people to add their names. These are taken down in the afternoon the day before the competition. Everyone who enters pays their own green fee and then an additional 5€ to the organisers for the prizes

Tuesday competitions are separate individual mens and ladies competitions, the ladies going out first. Sune and Marianne maintain special handicaps for people taking part in Tuesday competitions. You start with your official handicap but your Tuesday handicap alters depending on how well you play on a Tuesday.

The Friday competitions are team competitions, normally of 4 players. We play a mixture of competitions, e. g. Texas Scramble, Best 2 from 4 Stableford, an easy version of Yellow Ball, a Waltz (thanks to Tarleton Golf for introducing us to this format. On hole 1, 1 players stableford score counts, on 2, 2 players, on 3, 3 players, on hole 4 back to 1 player and repeat 1, 2, 3 around the course). etc.

We publish tee times for the Friday competitions on the internet on a Thursday evening. We also publish results on the internet. There is a link to the tee time page in the Classified section on our own site. There is a link to the results page from the tee times page.

Sometimes we don´t have exact numbers for 4 players a team and up to 3 teams have to have an imaginary fourth player called Doris. Doris is an OK player and is very consistent. She always scores 28 stableford points scoring 1 point on the 9 hardest holes and 2 points on the 9 easiest holes. In Spain, countback of players/teams with level scores is based on lower handicap rather than back 9 holes etc. Doris is allocated a handicap of 28 if we have a countback situation between a 3 player and a 4 player team.

After the competition we all meet up at a local bar for the prize giving. The bars used vary over time but our bar of choice for Friday competitions at the moment is La Plaza.

So if you are over in Almerimar and fancy some friendly golf feel free to put your name on the list and join them.
