Getting Our ITV

March 3rd, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

Today our lovely old work-horse of a Cherokee Jeep passed its itv again, and I have to say that once again the whole process was incredibly easy. We decided to use the itv center at Balanegra as last year, but there is another one close to Almerimar at Vícar. An appointment isn’t necessary but is advised as they can get busy. We had made one for 12:45 and we didn’t have to wait long as our inspection started by 12:55 and was over by 13:15.

For more details on how to get to the itv center and a full description of the inspection, please click on our previous article below:

Getting an itv for your car

The only slight change to that information is there appears to be a new telephone number: 902 57 57 57

My only other comments are to listen VERY carefully for your registration number, as they call them out pretty fast, and to say how friendly and helpful everyone was. They speak absolutely no English, and I had very few useful spanish words but with some lateral thinking we managed to work out what we needed to do. The little walky talky thing you get given is also pretty cool; it is so the inspector can continue to communicate when he is down underneath the car in the service pit inspecting the steering I think!

AND finally, the cost this year was a mere 33.09€, made up of the tarifa (price) of segurida (safety), 23.43€ (interesting amount), tarifa de gases, 3.2 and tax. So if anyone has been paying extra for a garage or third party to take their car for its itv, I’d advise that you try doing it yourself next time. Door to door the whole process took under 90 mins, and there is a certain satisfaction in doing something yourself like most of the Spaniards.

Oh … one last tip: If you do make an appointment, make sure you get there with about 10 mins to spare, as you need a little time to be registered on the computer and to pay for the inspection up-front.
