Topic: Roquetas Rumours & Facts

Anyone know if there is any truth behind the rumour that the India Gate is to close? I know the restaurant is up for sale but that doesn't really mean anything does it as I am sure a lot of places would sell if made the right offer, but I heard that they were actually closing in a few weeks time?

Yet another case of domestic violence ending in a couple of deaths just up the road in Roquetas de Mar!

A 36 year old Moroccan man has killed his Spanish partner aged 46 and her 22 year old son, before fleeing to Barcelona and handing himself in.

Olula Del Rio painter Agustin Sanchez ‘Garren’, has donated a painting called ‘Sensations of the Soul’ to Roquetas de Mar Town Hall. The work was painted after Spain won the World Cup, and is the artists way of thanking the town for its support in exhibiting his work.

Over three hundred people attended last Saturday at the Gala for Women, organized by the PSOE in Roquetas de Mar to commemorate the International Day of Working Women and this year, as new, it has developed in the Hotel Bellavista de Playa Serena, in Roquetas de Mar. The event put the brooch to a week of activities with which the PSOE in Roquetas wanted to emphasize the role of women in society and the gaps that still exist for full gender equality.

Councillor for the Beaches, Luis Miguel Carmona, announced last week that  46 volunteers will be manning the beaches at Roquetas de Mar during the summer months starting in just over a week’s time on 1 June. Because of the anticipated upturn in the number of tourists expected to visit the area the Civil Defence staff will be manning the beaches for 15 days longer than is usually the case, right up until 15 September.

From now until October, some 15,000 tourists from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Iceland are expected to visit Roquetas de Mar. This is thanks to an agreement reached at the Berlin Tourism Fair between Roquetas de Mar town hall and the Serhs Tourism Group.

Before the tourists arrived, the interim mayor, Gabriel Amat, and the Tourism Councillor, Angel Mollinedo, received 26 agents for the tour operator who visited local hotels, beaches and places of interest, as well as studying the facilities the town has to offer.

I see Chris posted this recently:

Latest on Las Uvas. Gilberts in Roquetas is closing and they are taking over Las Uvas, but it will retain the name, although it is being refurbished (think 'cream') and should be open to frienda and family this Friday and to the public on Saturday.

It isn't going to be an American Diner though.

Re: Roquetas Rumours & Facts

The Junta de Andalucía dealt a blow to the economic development of the province after announcing that three key public works projects have been shelved due to severe cash shortages.

Work on the by-pass in Roquetas de Mar and Albox – part of the troubled Almanzora motorway –came to a grinding halt last week, while workers building a road and tunnel to improve access to the port of Garrucha were expected to down tools within a week.

The cost of all three projects had been set at almost 93 million euros. The access to the port of Garrucha includes the construction of a 250-metre tunnel for heavy goods vehicles, while the Roquetas bypass involves building a 7.4-kilometre road to help access to the Gran Plaza shopping centre.

Regarding the 43.8-million euro bypass in Albox, the regional government said the decision to stop work had been taken because the construction firm had gone bust (as reported in CA News earlier this month).

The setback is all the greater as almost 90 per cent of the 8.7-kilometre long bypass has been completed or is currently under construction. The news comes after the Junta announced that the budget for public works projects had been slashed by more than 60 per cent.

Hoteles Playa has announced that the Playaluna hotel in Roquetas del Mar will close for good, after the company was unable to agree to a lease renewal on the property. The company is saying that the landlord refused to negotiate, but the unions have claimed that the negotiations were simply an excuse in order to close the lossmaking hotel.

55 people will lose their jobs when it closes for good on the 9th of April.

Re: Roquetas Rumours & Facts

TUI UK (think Thomas Cook) has signed an agreement with the tourism ministry to bring some 600 Brits a month to Roquetas del Mar.

All inclusive, of course, which means they probably won’t go out of their hotel much, and so won’t bring in any wealth to the town, but hey. 600 tourists are 600 tourists, right?
