The Junta de Andalucía dealt a blow to the economic development of the province after announcing that three key public works projects have been shelved due to severe cash shortages.
Work on the by-pass in Roquetas de Mar and Albox – part of the troubled Almanzora motorway –came to a grinding halt last week, while workers building a road and tunnel to improve access to the port of Garrucha were expected to down tools within a week.
The cost of all three projects had been set at almost 93 million euros. The access to the port of Garrucha includes the construction of a 250-metre tunnel for heavy goods vehicles, while the Roquetas bypass involves building a 7.4-kilometre road to help access to the Gran Plaza shopping centre.
Regarding the 43.8-million euro bypass in Albox, the regional government said the decision to stop work had been taken because the construction firm had gone bust (as reported in CA News earlier this month).
The setback is all the greater as almost 90 per cent of the 8.7-kilometre long bypass has been completed or is currently under construction. The news comes after the Junta announced that the budget for public works projects had been slashed by more than 60 per cent.
