Fast Travel In Spain

February 4th, 2008 - Sandra Marshall

A new train link between Madrid and Barcelona is set to open this month, which isn’t immediately helpful to us here in Almerimar, but does open up a new fast way to visit both the major cities in one trip i.e. cheap flight to one, train link and then cheap flight home!

The super-slick AVE S103 service is going to run at speeds of nearly 220 mph, definitely taking on the airlines.

“The Ave S103 is the kind of train that British commuters can only dream of, and forms the centrepiece of plans to make Spain a model for the rest of Europe, and the world leader in high-speed trains by 2010. Its 200-metre aluminium chassis carries 404 passengers, whose reclining chairs - which can swivel to face the direction of travel - are fitted with video and music players.”

Sounds fantastic! and this link is only part of the big plans for Spain’s state rail operator Renfe. The aim is to have 10,000km of high-speed track in Spain by 2020, so that 90% of the population will be no more than 30 miles from a high-speed station.

In December of last year lines connecting Madrid and Málaga opened, and work is under way to join Madrid and Lisbon. I wonder how high Almeria is up the list?

The overall aim is to make the train again the dominant mode of transport in the country. To read more click below:

About Almerimar

Almerimar is located in the region of Andalucia, Spain. The nearest airport is 30km away in Almeria. Other airports that are within 3 hours include Malaga, Murcia, Granada, and Alicanti. Other holiday resorts in the region include Mojacar , Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar

Almerimar is a great place to live as an expat amongst the expats, or to work amongst the Spanish. There are all kinds of properties including villas, apartments and town houses for rent or sale. It is a very traditional part of Spain, with traditional Spanish foods so if you plan to travel to Spain either to look for jobs, for your company to trade with companies in Spain, or to learn Spanish and enjoy the Spanish weather then come and take a look.
