Expat Voting Rights
January 15th, 2008 - Sandra MarshallHere’s a great article to encourage some healthy debate among we expats and it follows on nicely from my previous post, Voting From Abroad, which argued that maybe expats shouldn’t continue to be allowed to vote in their country of origin.
Apparently, 69,000, resident immigrant Polish workers are now able to vote in their national elections via 20 polling stations that have been made available to them in the UK. The writer of the article (who happens to be in France) says the following about this:
“It is incredibly ironic to think that this present Government, and its’ Ministries must have bent over backwards to make this possible. This from a government that is doing its’ best to take away votes from British citizens who have left the country, apparently because they suspect all those leaving the UK, and by gum they are leaving in their thousands the past few years, are die-hard Tories.”
Interesting point, and he goes on to complain about what he calls the “pernicious legislation, enacted by this present Government”, that takes away an expat’s right to vote after they have left the UK for 15 years. SO now you have 2 opposing points of view re. expat voting rights. To read more click below:
