Expat Living The Spanish Way – Cooking Habas Con Jamón

April 19th, 2009 - Chris Marshall

Rather like the Pimientos de Padrón Habas Con Jamón is a very traditional dish here in Spain. It is served as a starter or as a tapas, and is incredibly easy to cook.

About Habas Con Jamón

It is a very simple dish, very popular in Madrid and Granada, and is a regular dish in the Menu Del Dia. A lot of main courses in Spain are served with vegetables, primarily because of dishes like this. It is traditional to have the salad and vegetables separately and before the main course.

Cooking Habas Con Jamón

Cooking time: very much a matter of taste, but approximately 20 minutes

Ingredients: broad beans (baby ones are best, the smaller the better!), serrano ham, onions, garlic, olive oil, salt (to taste)

Preparation:

  1. Heat the olive oil and add the onion and garlic
  2. Fry onions and garlic until soft, then add the ham and fry for 5 minutes
  3. Add the beans and stir for 2 to 3 minutes
  4. Turn the heat down, cover the pan and simmer on very low heat until beans are soft. If necessary add a little water

As with a lot of of Spanish food best eaten with fresh crusty bread and in this case a really nice cold beer!

Variations: Some people like to add a red pepper

Where To Get Them In Almerimar

We have eaten them in Al-rruz, La Barbera and La Solea.

If you have eaten them then please tell us where. If you have a dish that you would like us to try and cook then please feel free to leave a comment

[...] After your initial binge on the tapas (which is still free in Almerimar and many parts of Andalucia) you will come to realise and appreciate the effects of the Mediterranean Diet here in Spain. It really is a case of salads, fruit, vegetables, fish and of course red wine! Olive Oil is the backbone to many a dish, and given time you too will be enjoying cooking Paella, trying out Sailors Clams or enjoying a dish of Habas con Jamón. [...]

I think this write up was secretly a good start to a potential series of articles about this topic. So many users act like they know what they are writing about when it comes to this area and in reality, hardly anyone actually get it. You seem to know about it though, so I think you need to run with it. Thanks a lot!!
