Expat Living The Spanish Way – Cooking Habas Con Jamón
April 19th, 2009 - Chris MarshallRather like the Pimientos de Padrón Habas Con Jamón is a very traditional dish here in Spain. It is served as a starter or as a tapas, and is incredibly easy to cook.
About Habas Con Jamón
It is a very simple dish, very popular in Madrid and Granada, and is a regular dish in the Menu Del Dia. A lot of main courses in Spain are served with vegetables, primarily because of dishes like this. It is traditional to have the salad and vegetables separately and before the main course.
Cooking Habas Con Jamón
Cooking time: very much a matter of taste, but approximately 20 minutes
Ingredients: broad beans (baby ones are best, the smaller the better!), serrano ham, onions, garlic, olive oil, salt (to taste)
Preparation:
- Heat the olive oil and add the onion and garlic
- Fry onions and garlic until soft, then add the ham and fry for 5 minutes
- Add the beans and stir for 2 to 3 minutes
- Turn the heat down, cover the pan and simmer on very low heat until beans are soft. If necessary add a little water
As with a lot of of Spanish food best eaten with fresh crusty bread and in this case a really nice cold beer!
Variations: Some people like to add a red pepper
