One thing that you will have to do as an expat living in Spain is learn to tell the time all over again! The mañana reputation is well know, and a little unfair, but is a good example of the attitude to time that most Spaniards adopt. Basically time is there’s to control, not to be controlled by!

A few things that will help are:

  1. Breakfast is generally around 10am
  2. Lunch is when the morning ends, generally around 3pm
  3. The afternoon is when the siesta ends and the shops re-open, generally around 5pm
  4. If a Spaniard suggests going out for dinner they mean 10pm
  5. If a younger Spaniard suggests going out for a drink on Saturday night, they mean meet at 11.30pm and finish about 6am!

The pace of life is much slower, and somehow time just doesn’t seem to be in such short supply when you live in Spain
