Expat Living – Bumping Into Friends
January 16th, 2009 - Chris MarshallSands and I have earmarked Thursday as the day that we will try not to do any work (actually Sands has earmarked every day as the day she tries ….. very successfully…. not to do any work) and to spend as much of the day as possible together just chilling out, talking, watching a movie etc etc.
Yesterday was the first such day this year. For one reason or another we hadn’t got round to it yet this year, but didn’t want to slide into bad habits too early in the new year …… well that was the plan!!
I was all set to do nothing in the morning, but I got an email from Ireland regards a project I am involved in and I needed to sort out a revised quote, find a few answers to questions and provide a quick update. Didn’t take too long, but while I was doing that I had a quick IM chat with a friend and for no known reason at all came up with a idea for a new site that we decided we would do together, so had to grab a few domain names and brief my developer colleague …. and of course that meant we had a bit of a catch up on some other projects.
Still managed to be done in time to go and have breakfast with Sands at La Barbera. Two coffees each and a tostada with jamon and tomato, all for 7€. Spent a very pleasant hour and a half watching the sea, enjoying the sun, and just chatting and catching up. Very relaxing, exactly what we needed, and something we don’t do enough.
Back home we spent some time with the cats, did a bit of reading, watched some TV and then decided that we would go and feed the cats together and then go to the D-Bar for a few drinks.
Bumped into Oscar (again) and had a drink with him, and Sands had a good chat with Britta who agreed to become another fosterer of cats for Almerimar Life Strays which is great news!
Thought we would grab the bill (14€ for 6 glasses of wine and tapas and a coffee with brandy for Oscar) and head down to the marina to get a take away. On the way down got a text off Chris & Maria saying they were in Mac Gowans so thought we would have a quick drink with them, and as we walked past Al-rruz Inés and Juan Carlos were just coming out and said they were going to Mac Gowans.
Two hours and 3 Guinness’s and red wines later we picked up the curry we had ordered as a take away (30€ drinks and food bill) and came back to the apartment with Inés and Juan Carlos to eat a very pleasant curry, listen to some music (I am hooked The Killers Day & Age at the moment) and have a good catch up.
A typical day? Not at all. The type of day that we had in mind when we decided to have ‘Set Away Thursdays’? Yes, totally. Our lifestyle is far from ‘normal’ with no regular day job etc. but for us it works really well and this expat living style in Almerimar is one that we wouldn’t swap for anything.
